New Kittens

My cat had a litter of six seemingly very healthy looking kittens.
They seem to be eating very well, and they seem to be crying like they
should be crying.  Father Cat is also around.  When momma had her
kittens the Daddy cat came in and helped her lick off the little ones.
He has also appeared to not go very far from her or the kittens.  He
watches his babies and he checks on them.  My question is, is this
normal?  He even helped clean them off when they first came out.  He
is a very gentle cat and he is very laid back, not jealous of those
kitttens at all.  Momma lets him check his babies and doesn't hiss or
anything at him.  It was really surprising as we were unsure of how he
would react to them.
Also Momma is letting us pick up her babies and pet them.  My
question is how much handling should we be doing on kittens born a day
ago?  Momma really doesn't mind the visitors nor does she mind Daddy
Cat being in the room with her.  Anyways thank-you in advance for your
advise it is much appreciative.

I would be vigilent.  I love cats, and I am sure that some male cats can behave
nicely around kittens,,,,,but when I was a child (many moons ago) I had a
litter of kittens that I dearly loved, and a 'tomcat' came around and killed
all of them.  My mom and I have been talking about cats/kittens lately, and
this conversation came up.  I remember those kittens - and their sudden
death......I had, however, forgotten the 'details', which we recently
discussed.  The male cat had simply slit the kittens throats, all of
them......and left them where they were. Therefore, I will suggest a bit of
caution - and hope for the best of luck. :-)

My father told me that one of my puppies
had died. It was the white boxer that he
explained was a "throughback". It took me
several decades to realize that the dog had
been killed and not died naturally.

I'd be hesitant to let the father cat come near the kittens.  I
recently was sent out to rescue 9 kittens of 4 mothers. There was one
father that we knew about for all the kittens.  Of the 9, one was
male.  There were many dead kittens before we were called in.
Apparently the tom was killing the male kittens.  Fact of kitty life.

Well, not all cat fathers. I'd keep an eye out, but i've heard of plenty who
are good dads too.

We have one male cat who lets
the babies nurse on him for long
periods of time... Couldn't believe
it. And one of the spayed female
cats nurses too. He is the mellowest
and least aggressive of all.
