Our new young cat (6 mths) is not eating except  _very_ expensive dried beef
which we rarely get for ourselves, he has taste, the little guy :-)
I don't want to feed him too many treats or fancy food so that he does not
go
off normal food.
The vet gave me some Hill's diet food, which he doesn't eat either. She
found out that he suffers badly from ear mites. This could cause his loss of
appetite. Has anybody got any more infos or experience? Thanks.
I notice that he drinks extremely much. What could that mean? He drinks at
least 1/2 dl of water per day. How much do your cats drink during a day?

Dried beef is VERY salty, and probably very harmful to your kitty's
health.  No wonder he drinks so much water!

Did you get the ear mite problem taken care of?  He could have worms or
a lot of other problems causing his loss of appetite.  He needs a good
checkup by the vet.

He was drinking a lot before I gave him the dried meat, and of course he
only got a little bit as a treat.
He seems to be unwell, but he is also a fussy eater  :-(  which doesn't
help.

I wrote in my posting that I took him to the vet... and if I go there I
don't come home with the diagnosis ear mites and do nothing about it, I was
given some drops. And: He has no temperature.
My question is: Can ear mites bother a cat so much that the whole cat
suffers to the point that it doesn't eat any more?

I got the cat from the shelter: checked, wormed, treated against fleas,
shots.
He seems to have settled in here well, he has taken over 4/5 of daughter's
pillow, comes for cuddles all by himself, purrs away. That's why I believe
it's not because he is in a new home that he doesn't eat. He was a bit plump
when he arrived, but now he's rather thin. I shall be back at the vet's on
Monday.

I'm glad he's going back to the vet - I don't think he should be losing
weight.  Sometimes a kitten (or child!) can be quite ill and still play
and act somewhat normal.
Can you find out what they fed him at the shelter?  Maybe he just wants
something to eat that he's used to.

Another possibility is worms.  I think they have to be wormed twice to
get them all, but other people here would know more about it than I do.

Good luck.  Hope you find a solution.

Buy some Revolution from the vet.  This will get rid of the ear mites as
well as any fleas that are on him.  A lot of cats don't like Science
Diet.  Try a good quality canned food like Wellness or Innova.  Human
food won't provide the necessary nutrients.

Thank you for the tip.
Could there be another name for revolution because we don't have that brand
here. Who is the manufacturer?
Some food that people talk about seems to run under other names here like
Purina -> Felix and Friskies -> Gourmet.
