While there are people who will click on an unknown and undescribed
link, there are also a growing number who realize that clicking on
unknown links in newsgroups is a good way to catch viruses and trigger
other malware. For those of us who observe at least basic security
precautions, it would be charitable to describe the link. I summarize
and include a verbatim quote so that those who aren't going to click
through can at least understand the discussion.
It appears to me that most of the unexplained links are posted by
people with an unreasonable axe to grind or a poorly thought out
position to defend.

BTW you can't get a virus by clicking on a link. And even
if you could your virus software would catch it. That is
why you have the virus software running.

The first statement is incorrect. The second presumes that all antivirus
writers have precognition and can update software before the virus is
written.

Thanks Ted, quite true. My newsreader doesn't support "clickavle links,"
so it it's something I want to look at (and, as you said, how would I
know?) I either have to write the link down, or send it to another mail
addy where I can click on it.
