I like cats but have refrained from adopting one because I am often away
sailing. But I have recently been offered a young cat (8 months) who will
get sent to the cat's home in the next few days unless it finds a home. Will
I be offering it a happy home if I take it? I have a nice quiet house with
garden away from roads in south of France where he/she would live most of
the year, but since I go sailing around the Med most of the summer he/she
would need to come with me then since I rent my house in the summer. Will a
young ca adapt readily to life on a boat and the changes in home?

there is no way to predict this...
you will need to take your cat for a *short* trial sail and see what happens

cat could love it  or it could be a total disaster  !

My parents-in-law had a cat who *loved* fishing *in a bass boat*. He couldn't
wait to go when he realized the boat was about to go out. Also, my daughter's
cat is so well socialized he goes everywhere with her, any store that allows
cats, she takes him. Both cats were socialized and taken out from the time they
were very small. I agree it's pretty unusual behavior for a cat, but they can
be amazingly adaptable, if you start when they're young.

We accquired a cute little kitty a week before we left on a months cruise on
our sailboat. She was about seven weeks old when we left. She adapted well
and after two weeks, it was her boat.

We also have an RV and I think that she prefers the land travel to the boat, but
she seems just as happy to be where her water and food dish are located
whether at home, on the water, or traveling down the highway.

I think if you purred most of the time that the chances of you being adopted
would be better. :c)

I would give it a try. But do give the cat enough time to get to know you.
Do cats get seasick?
