After a significant search our new "son", a black, long-haired Persian,
about 9 months old was adopted yesterday.  We kept him in the wife's
bedroom/bathroom for the last 24 hours, rather than the entire house for his
sense of security.  His litter box is in the shower, and his food dish and
kitty fountain are just outside it.

He's acting more comfortable/spending less time under the bed.  How long
would you wait to give him run of the house?

He's afraid of new people and surroundings right now in its
young life. Give him anywhere
from a week to two or three
weeks for him to get used to
his new surroundings.
        Congrats on getting your
new baby. I'm sure he'll give
you many hours of enjoyment.

(I am assuming that there are no other pets in the house)

In many ways he will tell you when he is ready to explore more. Spend
time with him in the room where he is at.

Soon he will want to be where YOU are at.
Make him feel safe.
That is the biggest thing.

But make sure you take time now to bond with him.

We're definitely doing that, in fact we are having a love fest on the bed
with him this evening.  He's just rolling around and going from one to the
other for head bumping and petting.
