What About IAMS?

I recently switched from dry Whiskas to Iams cat food.  My
cats get hairballs and Iams has a formula for that.  Does anybody
have an opinion about Iams?  Is their food okay or what?

My cats love the regular stuff. I cannot comment on the hairball issue
though - mine are both shorthairs and don't suffer from the rpoblem

Just "okay."  You could do better.

Oh my.....................

I wouldn't have responded quite so harshly but Dee could have offered and
alternative and give the reasons why.

Personally, I believe that when it comes to hairballs, it's a hit and miss
situation. What works well for one cat doesn't necessarily work for others.
Try the alternatives? Give your vet a call and pop the question?

http://www.penmarric.ns.ca/catcare/usefulinfo/Hairballs.htm

My Matilda has been with me for almost 3 years and has never coughed a
furball. Though she's a short haired cat - she does shed, but she is brushed
regularly and her diet consists of more canned food than dry.

Hope you find your solution.

Judy & Matilda.

...and has done so many times.  I did the research on my own.  I'm sure
that anyone who cares enough about their cats to want to feed them decent
foods and has a computer to do research on can do the same.  Some of my
suggestions would be felidae, life's abundance, flint river
ranch...because regular commercial foods are full of crap like
preservatives, dyes, unspecified "by-products," etc.

Well, if I knew the answer, I wouldn't have asked the question.
Generally, this is a friendly forum, but I guess there are exceptions.
Always a rotten egg in the crowd.

I'm sure that you do love your cats, however, Iams is highly
over-rated.  There are better foods available to feed your cats if you
can afford them.

BTW, people who have to use profanity to get their point across are
showing their ignorance.

That's it.  It was imported into Tennessee years ago as erosion
control.  It stopped the erosion, but it also stopped all the
plantlife in it's path.

I'm getting seriously annoyed at my coffee coloured monitor y'know :-)

Where did he go? He's popped up in uk.legal again (where the classic
putdown was "go back and bother the cat people again") but he seems to
be slowing down in his dotage.

It is now a criminal offense to cultivate kudzu in Georgia (I'm in
Atlanta).  And, yes, the kudzu moniker has got me in hot water
elsewhere on the internet.  I posted in rec.gardens and got flamed

Like I said ...nutjob.  I've been on this newsgroup for a long time.
People here know me, some like me, some may even have some modicum of
respect for me!  :)  I think you got a little carried away in your

Call her back and ask her if she's a nutritionist, or if there might
actually be better foods to feed your cat than Iams.  Is that what your
fit was all about?  You want people to agree with you that you're doing
the best you possibly can by your cats by feeding them Iams?  I'm sorry,
you're not.  You asked for people's opinions...there are better foods to
feed your cats, that's fact.

It would seem you are the one with the hairball. Try IAMS yourself and see

Piggy-backing, since I cannot see OP.

My 12 year old cat just nearly died from a giant hairball recently, so
I have come up with a plan to keep him hair-ball free.  He is free-fed
Nutro hairball maintenance diet, Purina "indoor" cat formula, and
Purina Diabetic diet (D/M) - all dry chow, as much as he wants.

Twice daily, he is fed 3 oz. canned cat food - Iams kitten, D/M, or
other ground cat food high in water content.

Each day he gets 1/2 inch ribbon of hairball remedy goo (Petromalt,
Linetone, etc.) and eats two herbal hairball releif chewable tablets:

http://www.petsmart.com/products/product_12319.shtml

he also gets a little milk once or twice weekly.

So far, this regimen has cleared his HUGE blockage, and has him
pooping regularly.

Best of luck,
-L.

I cant speak to IAMS but I do use one of those hairball control malt

However my other cat doesnt like the stuff so she just coughs 'em up

I'm getting tired of looking for the best cat food of good value which the
cat likes. I am also not so sure about fish.
So I filled five bowls with different flavours, offered them to Tom and was
sure that he would steer to the one he likes best.
He didn't - he took a bit of everything :-)
But he didn't touch Iams chicken.
So there...

My kitties eat wellness and love it!  I was thinking of feeding them Barf
for cats, but not sure I can handle feeding that since I'm vegetarian.

supermarket cat foods are full of fillers and by-products.  Normally you
should look at the ingredients, it lists in order by the amount.

I am not interested in starting a debate on feeding cats a vegetarian
diet but only to offer this information.  If you would like to try a
non-animal-based food check out the Evolution products at
vegancats.com.  My DSH calico loves the dry kibble and the gourmet stew
canned food.  She will eat the other canned variety but will beg for
the stew.  All Evolution foods meet the same nutritional standard as
meat-based ones do but are completely vegan.

Hehe, I had to look it up :)  I knew what you meant, but not what the
acronym BARF actually stood for, I've seen at least three interpretations
of it.  I can understand not wanting to deal with it if you're vegan.  I
tried (am still trying actually) to switch my cats to raw and they looked
at me like I was crazy.

Wellness is another good one, even George likes it and he'll eat almost no
canned foods.  I also like Pet Guard, and it's not too expensive.

I have been feeding my three year old boys Iams weight control formula with
hairball care. They seem to really like it. I trust the Iams brand. This
formula comes in small round pellets even our kitten has been found to munch
