Hi there,

I found my cat by my front door this morning, she had died in the night.  I
don't know why, and I'm trying to rule out foul play.  I know someone who
would do this sort of thing.  She was pretty stiff, so I couldn't determine
if she had broken bones, and she had a little bit of blood coming out of her
nose and one of her paws.  Does antifreeze poisoning cause bleeding like
that?

I can't afford a vets autopsy, so any help you all could give would be much
appreciated.

Thank you,

Could she have been hit by a car? Generally when they are hit by a car they
will have a little blood out of the nose and sometimes mouth. They will get a
paw or two hurt also if just hit. Sounds like she was trying to get home after
getting injured. There is more foam and saliva at the mouth for poisoning I
believe. A necropsy is about $75 if you need to be certain. I'm not a vet.
Hopefully others have some opinions as well.

We took Jacky to an all-night ER clinic for necropsy, the vet charged $45 for
the visual exam. Extra for bloodwork/tissue samples. I do think it's very
important if there are other cats in the household to determine the cause of
death. Usually if a cat's been hit by a car, their claws will be shredded from
pavement. I'm very sorry you lost your cat so suddenly.

Zak,

I am sorry for your loss. Antifreeze doesn't do this normally. However, it
depends on how much (if any) antifreeze was ingested. It's not an
instantaneous death if your cat did ingest antifreeze. If your cat was
poisoned with antifreeze its central nervous system would have been hit
first. Once the effects are over, the kidneys are damaged by the antifreeze,
and just stop functioning. There may be vomiting, which could cause the
blood you describe. From the way you explain the cat, it sounds to me like
it may have been clipped by a car, or possibly kicked in the torso. Keep in
mind that bones DO NOT have to be broken in order for there to be internal
organ damage. If there was trauma internally, then the vet will be the only
person who will be able to tell you.

Well she could have been hit by a car and managed to get home to die ,the
blood could have been for internal injuries. Antifreeze will destroy the
intestial tract andeverything in between from what I've read there will be
blood coming out the rear not the mouth. And she would have been sick
looking .So my guess is hit by car died later.Maybe someone else could add
something. hope that helps...sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss.

As others have said it does seem like she may have been hit by a car,
another sign you could look for is scuffed/ragged claws.

Can you afford not to have one?  I had a cat die a few
years ago and had an autopsy done to rule out
anything dangerous for my other cats.
