I have two cats that my vet put on Purina DM
food for weight loss. The prescription food
is becuse one of the cats is a bit overweight.
On the label it says to refrigerate between uses.
How do I do this? When I put food in the refrigerator
none of my cats will eat it because it is too cold.
I've tried taking it out of the refrigerator
an hour or two before, heating it in the microwave,
none of which works. For whatever reason they
won't eat it unless it is room temperature.
Anyone else encountered this? Are my cats the
only ones on this planet who do this? Any solutions?

Very picky cats here. Try heating just the bowl with hot water, maybe
leave in a little extra of the hot water in the bottom of the bowl and
swirl the food in, or just let it sit in a tiny bit of hot water
before serving.

First, you don't absolutely have to refrigerate between uses. The food
was free of bad bugs the moment you opened the can. It would take
several hours for them to get started. Personally I've left food out
for the better part of a day and still eaten it, and I never suffered
any evil things as a consequence.
But as for your picky cats, allow me to acquaint you with an old
proverb my German father used to intone at the dinner table every time
I didn't want to eat and my mother was putting up a fuss about it --
hunger macht den besten koch.

I have often used one tin for two days: I put on a perfectly fitting plastic
lid. (You can buy them or find a tin of salted nuts with one of the same
size.)
Tom gets fed in the mornings, then I put the tin with the plastic lid into
the fridge, but left it out again over night. Like this it was OK and well
sealed and the right room temperature too. It's also less hassle than
warming the contents up.
About "Hunger macht den besten Koch": Well, hunger makes incentive: Tom
doesn't like his dry food at the moment, so he left it and just caught a
mouse instead :-)

My cat is the same and so was my previous one. I don't refrigerate the cat
food. Once the thin has been opened it sits on the counter with a lid on it
until it's gone, which isn't long as I get her food in the smallest size of
tin. 3.5oz.
Matilda is a grazer. She gets 1/2 a tin when she goes out in the morning and
the second half when she comes in, within an hour later. When I return from
work, same thing. The food doesn't really have time to spoil.
She does eat in-between meals and has 24/7 access to calorie reduced kibble.
When, for whatever reason the small tins haven't been available, I've come
home with the next size up and have it out with a cover on until it's been
consumed by the end of the day. Never had a problem.
Anyway, this what I do.
