I finally got some pictures of the undersides of Sebastian's feet, and
I'd like thoughts and comments on the strangely deformed claw on his
front paws. I've read most of what Google turns up on polydactyl
cats, but I haven't found anything quite like this. The claws are not
anchored to anything, but they are beginning to curl around close
enough to his feet that I'm wondering if I should clip them, take him
to the vet for clipping, or just leave them alone. The one not shown
is longer than the one in hte picture.

I need to get a good portrait of him for the page, but he really
doesn't cooperate at picture time - he was sleeping on a shelf head to
head with Fleagor when I took the ones of his paws.

If he can wear them down by walking, then he's okay. If it does start to grow
in a circle, it may need to be clipped. As he's over a year old and they
haven't bothered him yet, he may be okay.

He's one of the unknowns - he was an intact adult stray when I took
him in - he was probably at least a year old when I got him, but the
claws are not being worn down and they are growing slowly. Since they
aern't anchored to anything solid, they might not penetrate even if
they do grow around.
I guess I'll just keep an eye on them.

First, Sebo is a beautiful cat! I am partial to black cats. Second,
I do think that claw looks like it could be trouble because it looks
like the curl is pointing inward and I'd imagine that it is piercing
his paw pad when he walks. Can you clip his claws easily? I know you
have tons of cats, but has a vet seen it?

How unusual! I've never seem a claw/pad growing like that...I would just keep
it clipped. It looks like it may become ingrown if you don't, or he could snag
it.
The vet could remove it pretty easily (he removed this weird pseudo-toe with
claw off of Yoda because it was impossible to clip and kept getting ingrown).
But if you can keep it clipped for him, I think that's what I would do.
He's a very handsome boy.

He's not so handsome right now - he's got partially healed wounds all
over him from fighting with Mooch (see "Visitors night" message).
He's very selective in which cats he fights with: he is meerly
assertive with the other resident cats (this gets him nothing where
Fleagor is concerned - Fleagor neither fights nor yields) and the
neighbor's cat (Mickey), and most transient cats just get a threat
display, but about once a week he attacks Mooch. Mooch keeps coming
back though, I think the food I give him is about all he gets to eat.
Now, Mooch is a really handsome black cat - more so than either
Sebastian or Mudpie.

I had his feet examined when I had him neutered, but the claws were
ver small and the vet may have missed them - he certainly didn't count
them as toes.
I don't think they are hitting the ground, but if not, it's pretty
close.
And no, I can't clip his claws easily - he's strong and puts up quite
the struggle. In fact, I haven't managed to get all of the front ones
clipped at the same time.

Hello!
I have a cat with feet exactly like Sebastian! My Floyd has 21 working toes
and two extra claws. I keep them clipped and he's had no problems for over
five years.
Good luck with your new boy -

Sebastian is not a new one: he's been living with me for over a year
now. There are a couple of new ones, but I didn't mention them:
Tigger and Andrew
(<http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/tigger/tigger.andrew.cat_bed.1.jpg>).
Tigger has been there a couple of weeks longer and has his own page
(<http://gearbox.maem.umr.edu/tdavis/cats/tigger/>), but I am waiting
until Andrew's brother comes out of hiding, or I give up on him and
decide he ran away one of those nights when some cat removed the
blocking plate from the cat flap to build a page for either Andrew or
him and his brother. I've not been even 50% successful in getting
cats to stay when they had been living no more than a few miles away -
I'm not going to take any more from within ten miles by road of where
I live.
