Hi
My 13 year old female cat has a urinary tract infection. The doctor wants me to
give her liquid anti-biotics twice a day for 10 days. Its been about 5 days and
I absolutely can't get her to open her mouth and take it anymore. If there is
any medicine on her mouth she wont even lick it off and swallow it. Does
anybody have any advice on how to get this cats mouth open and give her the
medicine? She is a tough one.
Thanks for any help

Hey Steve!
Try wedging the dropper into the side of her mouth way towards the back.
Once you pull the dropper away, you may hve to hold her mouth shut until she
swallows it. You can ensure that she swallows it by stroking her throat.
I know how tough some cats can be! Once it took me, my vet and his assistant
to hold down a five pound cat for an examination. Let me know if it worked.

I either approach my h0p from the rear, or sit him next to me on the
couch to the left of me. I wrap my left arm around him and use my left
hand to *gently* wedge open his jaws, while I stick the syringe in and
squirt with my right.

Go back to the vet and get the antibiotics in a syringe and needle. Damn
sight easier than trying to get a cat to swallow something it doesn't
want to. My lump just sits resignedly when I stick him - he's given up
struggling as injections require no cooperation from the cat whatsoever.
They are surprisingly easy to do if the vet is prepared to show you how.

It's easier if you can work with a partner. If not, wrap the cat in a
beach towel, so all that sticks out is her head, and hug her wrapped
body close to you. With one hand, scruff her and pull her head back.
When she opens her mouth to protest, drop in the liquid.
Alternative: Put the medicine on a piece of fish or something smelly
that she likes, and in eating the fish, she'll get in some of the
medicine.

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up calling the vet and they are having me bring
her in every other day for a shot instead. Its $15 a shot but well worth it in my
mind. At least I know she is getting the medicine. I wish they would have told me
that option was available 6 days ago.
Thanks

I always just smack 'em hard on the nose. When their mouth flies open, I
shove my arm and the pill as far back as I can.

My cats can be tough to give medicine to as well but the best method I found
was to rap the cat up in a towel (so you cant be scratched), with only the
head poking out the top. Then with your thumb and forefinger open the mouth
(at the back of the jaw), then just squirt it down the back of the throat as
far as you can and they cant get it back up and have no choose but to take
it.
