Gilda is a 42-year-old Asian elephant who is housed alone at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. She spends the majority of her day in a small outdoor enclosure except for the brief time that she is brought onstage to be used by Siegfried and Roy in a disappearing act. Companionship is critical to the health and well-being of elephants. The most highly respected elephant experts in the world concur that it is extremely cruel to keep an elephant isolated from other elephants. Please write to the Mirage and ask that Gilda be retired to the Elephant Sanctuary (www.elephants.com) in Tennessee where she can experience the love and friendship of other elephants.

The only magic trick that PETA would like to see Siegfried & Roy perform is to make animals disappear from their act. Animals used as stage props are subjected to loud music, bright lights, mishandling, and other frightening aspects of an alien environment.
Gilda, a solitary elephant used in Siegfried & Roy’s casino act, is deprived of a female elephant’s most basic need: the companionship of other elephants. The duo has refused PETA’s requests to send Gilda to the Elephant Sanctuary, where she could live the remainder of her life in peace and enjoy the company of other elephants.
Siegfried & Roy promote the breeding of white tigers, an abnormal color variation of Bengal tigers. All captive white tigers are inbred, and some suffer serious congenital defects. In an attack that occurred before horrified tourists at Siegfried & Roy’s compound, a male tiger grabbed a female tiger by the throat and slowly choked her to death. According to a tourist who witnessed the incident, the male tiger had a stranglehold on the female’s neck for at least 20 minutes, and “nobody did anything ... no animal trainer was on hand” to intervene.

LostVegan - 06 Oct 2003 22:26 GMT >Quoting PETA about animals is like quoting Rush about liberals. >You get exactly what they want you to get. Nothing more, nothing less. >Balance is not an option. What an absolutely brainless thing to say. But your Limbaugh analogy is on the money, even though you meant it disparagingly. Rush gives you the unvarnished truth about conservative POV, and PETA about animals, from animals' POV. What kind of balance are you looking for? The kind that makes you feel good about abusing animals? PETA doesn't care about that, they don't care about balance, they want people to see what animals are actually going through from THEIR POV, not from the entertainment starved hordes' POV. Bravo to PETA, and f.ck S&R and anyone else who thinks of animals as toys for their amusement, or medical research for that matter. I'm ashamed that I still eat meat. Not nearly as much or as wide a variety as I used to, but I'm still addicted to the flesh. Also, not because I think that it's wrong to eat flesh, but because I'm aware of the treatment that some livestock suffers on the way to and in the slaughter house. If more people actually read PETA's publications and saw those conditions, they would eat less meat as well. I rationalize that I need to eat, and that killing animals for food is not as bad as torturing them for entertainment, but that's me, and I have to live with it. But don't you dare delude yourself into thinking that its just fine to torture animals for any reason you create.

Shashay Doofray - 07 Oct 2003 21:18 GMT Nobody knows what is in the mind of an elephant. Elephants live in groups in the wild out of necessity. It doesn't mean that they can be perfectly adapted to a solitary environment. She may be as happy as a clam not to have to share her food ration with anybody else or have to deal with the indiosyncracies of others of her species.
SD prefers a solitary environment herself
