Cats have many peculariar behaviors, but I recently discovered one that's
really hard to explain. My cat is an adopted stray, he usually spends the
night out (he's used to living outdoors), but as the cold winter nights are
now upon us, he often stays indoors. Last night, as I was "evicting" him
from the pillow of my bed, he smelled something on my face and started
licking like crazy. I almost had to fight him off. What was on my face? Just
minutes earlier, I had used a Clearisil pad for my acne! I didn't allow him
to continue, fearing that Clearisil is not supposed to be part of a cats
healthy diet!
Any ideas as to why he was so attracted to the scent?? It doesn't resemble
any food odors that I can think of, just smells like strong perfume.....

Is there alcohol in it? Maybe he's an alcoholic?

My Rexie seems to like strange tastes also. If there's a photo laying
around, he starts licking it. Move it and he'll go after it. My hubby
figured whatever it was couldn't be good for him so we keep them out
of his way. But there must be something in the developing solvent that
he likes!

My cat does this kind of thing too.  Bonnie is the pickiest eater alive -
she will only eat seafood flavours (but NOT salmon) - and she will lick my
face as well when I have stuff on it.  She particularly seems to like
Polysporin, or other antibiotic lotions.  I don't let her lick of course,
but she would if she could.  Maybe she thinks she's cleaning a foreign smell
off me?

However, when I use Neutrogena body lotion - sesame formula - it's like a
cat repellent.  She takes one whiff, and backs off with her ears flattened -
then runs off.  I don't know why she hates it so much.  She's ok when I use
Aveeno, though.

This is why I love cats so much - they can be so eccentric and peculiar, and
they have a mind of their own!

I never thought of that. Cats seem to enjoy cleaning foreign matter from
just about any living creature. But I still think there was something he
enjoyed - I never have to fight him off when I'm just plain dirty.
All that's in the stuff is perfume, salicylic acid, and yes perhaps a bit
of alcohol. I've seen my cat lick up spilled beer before, so maybe one of
the previous replies was right!

A friends cat likes to lick the bathtub after it's been cleaned with
bleach... One of my cats is obsessed with licking plastic... Some cats are
just wierd like that, I guess...

Cats love to eat antifreeze too, but it can kill them.

Please do not let your cats lick anything that contains alcohol or bleach!
In fact anything that WE wouldn;t eat! You might not have known but
chocolate is also poisonous to cats and dogs.

Its nothing weird about what they eat. Cats have tastes as well just like we
humans do. They will also try and clean us up if we don;t smell up to their
scratch.  They can;t however read the labels which state "DANGEROUS". We
have to do that for them.

Mother nature have given animals senses which help them distinguish between
good and poisonous. But mother nature didn;t know we humans would misuse the
nature and create such monsters (ie: bleach, antifreeze, cleaning products,
paints ec)that smell or taste like something originally meant to be good for
them. We must protect our babies and other animals from the worse enemy they
have: humans.
