We just learned that our cat Xena, only 6 years old, has kidney
failure. She has about a week left.
I got her as a kitten, and I consider her like a daughter instead of a
pet.

It's not fair.

Isn't there any thing a vet can do?

My Previous MeowBeast, although Eventually Succumbing to Kidney Failure,
_WAS_ helped and lived *another Four Years* by "hydrating"... he also was
put on that Prescription Science Diet uhhhhh... "Weak Kidney" Formula...

My Recommendation is To Go For It... in my case at least, it Worked...

My cat was diagnosed almost three years ago with CRF.  He is doing great
with hydration and food for renal failure.  Some people have been fortunate
enough to have their cats around for 7 years after initial diagnosis.  It's
certainly worth trying.

Patty.....I'm so sorry about your little furbaby. I know how hard it is
to loose a loved one. My long haired Russian Blue died in my arms from
FIP and it broke my heart. Just remember this, even though they are not
with us in the actual sense, they are with us in spirit, and you will
always remember them. My suggestion to you is to try to have as much
quality time together as you possibly can. She will leave this earth a
happier cat, and you will have some very fond memories of her.
God bless.

definately try changing the diet

i had a 15 year old cat who ate dry food and was dying of kidney failure
but switching her over to canned food...gave her another good two years!

Oh Patty, my heart breaks for you. I'm so sorry to hear about Xena. I hope you
find comfort that you have given her love and a good home.  Perhaps there can
be something a vet can do. My best wishes go out to you.

One of my cats had kidney failure and IBD.  The prognosis was "probably no
than a few weeks" and "certainly no more than 3 months."  We treated her
aggressively with a change in diet (it took many attempts to find one that
she could tolerate) and fluid therapy.  She lived another 3 years, and they
were quality years.  It's well worth it to make every attempt in a case like
this.

An update:

We are trying 200 cc of fluids w/ Vit B twice a week, and a can of
weak kidney formula.

I'm only doing it because you all have had sucess. If I hadn't heard
about the success, I would have had put her down to avoid her
experiencing pain.

Thanks.

That is very cool. I'm glad you posted. I'm going to do the
same when something like that happens.

It didn't take. We are going to the vet's in about 10 minutes to have
her put to sleep.

I'll miss her.

This just rips me apart.

She probably had Renal Amyloidosis,
http://pathweb.uchc.edu/eAtlas/GU/1348.htm  a rare genetic disease
usually only seen amomg cats in Siamese, Abbys, and Somalis.  My Black
and White female Tabby died of it at 5 years old, with 4 to 6 being
the maximum survival age for this disease. There is no cure since the
disease builds up fibres in the kidney and other organs blocking their
functioning.  There is no pain, the cat just builds up poisons in her
blood and endocrine pathways until she gets confused and spaced out.
I was with Gem and holding her when the vet injected the fatal dose of
anaesthesia.

Sorry, I konw first hand how much this hurts, but having my cat
checked for this disease did at least close the book on WHY Gem died!
