I just had a very  bad experience with my cat.He is 4 yrs old 19 lbs
friendlier than a dog. Last saturday he would go in the litter box and
couldn't pee. Had to take him to emergency clinic and told he had to have
surgery right away.We picked him up on Tuesday nite and when we got home the
poor thing still couldn't go on his own so after paying $1265.00 we were
desperate. Called my own vet who took him in. He is now back home since
tonite eating food that he doesn't care for too much for but content and
purring like you wouldn't believe.

PROBLEM?

Never buy stuff like Meow mix or store brands. My cat loved that sh.t but we
nearly lost him. Now as of today it is Royal Canin SO and only vet food. It
is more expensive, but more nourishing so they eat less and keeps them
healthy.

java, don't feel too badly. I also fed Meow Mix long ago, before I knew better.
Cats *do* love it. It's like kitty-crack.
Glad he's doing better.

Java-
It is so good to know your cat is doing better now. I agree with you about the
cheap food...because one of my cats nearly died recently and I believe the food
(Fancy Feast) may have been partially responsible. The
vet is still - two months later- talking about "occult tumor", but the cat had
UltraSound which should have shown any tumor occult or otherwise and did not. I
believe the cat had and passed a kidneystone. Cat's  not urinating blood
anymore, is eating well (very well- Wellness food now!) and is friskier than
she ever was before. Importing the good stuff at whatever expense (we are in
Hawaii) is definitely worth it. I can live on tofu, but the cat can't.

which is why i feed my kats science diet, max kat, or diamond kat branded
premium food. cool thing is, max kat and diamond are cheaper than science
diet :)

You might find this interesting: Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease.

"Although we may be a little ignorant of some of the causes of FLUTD we
do know more about the risk factors. We know that the Persian cat is
more susceptible to the disease while the Siamese is rarely troubled.
The disease is seen more commonly in the neutered, indoor, overweight
cat fed on a dry diet. Exactly why each of these factors constitutes a
risk is not clear but it’s probably related to a fat, lazy cat’s bladder
being a bit like a stagnant pool. If we want to help prevent FLUTD we
are ideally aiming at reversing the risk factors. We want a slimline,
active cat who empties its bladder more frequently. Over the past few
years we’ve been extolling the virtues of dried food to help keep teeth
nice and clean and regulate gut function but when we consider current
issues affecting the feline bladder, we’re starting to review the need
for more fluid going into the system to help flush out the urinary
tract. We can achieve this by offering tasty gravy flavoured water or
even reverting to tinned foods".

I feed my kitten both wet and dry food.  She seems to like the wet food, but
when I look at how much is left, 90% is left.  There are some foods, such as
yogurt, that she'll lick rather than eat.  I don't know if that's what she's
doing with the wet food.  I can hear her crunching her dry food (Science
Diet), so she can eat.  She's a 4 month old, 5 pound indoor tabby.

Many pets can cope with cheap food, but some don't (like my dog), and then
it works out much more expensive.
I totally agree with you, and I've learnt my lesson the hard way; but I do
have a question: in many wet cat foods, in fact in most of hem, there's
sugar. Can that be good for the cats?

If you get your food from the vet there should be no problem...By the way my
cat is doing better. He is peeing on his own now but sure hates the food in
paste. He has to eat a can a day so we have to force feed him with a
seringe.  What wouldn't we do for our beloved friends,

You may be doing the right thing but we have three cats, two males and one
female. We feed them a combinatination of common dry and canned cat food
from the Super Market.

They have had no problems with this diet over the past six years.

I have three cats too.  My oldest cat, Alex, is 19 and throws up any of the
cheaper brands of cat food.  Thing is, he prefers it to Iams (the only food
I have found so far that is not regurgetated).  Therefore, I have to feed
all three cats Iams Senior.  Something I noticed about the good brands of
cat food is that the cats do not eat as much because it is nutritionally
more dense than cheaper supermarket foods.
It is also easier on me because I don't have to clean up pools of vomit
every day anymore.
