Ken Phifer - 27 Nov 2004 14:22 GMT This morning I filled both cat water dishes...While I was shaving I heard a noise and on the kitchen table both kittens were taking turns drinking water from my glass...Why is this so irresistable to them?

dinkmeister - 27 Nov 2004 14:49 GMT my cat does this if his bowl is dirty even with clean water in it

Barb - 27 Nov 2004 16:53 GMT My new kitten is the first of my cats I ever saw do this and she did it as soon as I brought her home. Both she and another cat prefer to hang upside down into the bath tub and drink hot bath water. Beats me. I give them fresh water and wash out their bowls!
-- Barb Of course I don't look busy, I did it right the first time.

It became a game. I'd come slowwwly up out of sleep to the sound of "lap lap lap lap" then I would realize what it was and sit up and say "NO!" By that time she had drunk half of it and when she dashed away I swear she was snickering. Water is good for them. I didn't mind. I was on the lookout for floating fur when I drank my water, though.

Cathy Friedmann - 27 Nov 2004 18:58 GMT > I keep a lid over my water glass. It also works as a coaster. ;-)

natalie.polson@shetland.uhi.ac.uk - 10 Dec 2004 14:23 GMT My cat Krispie has a thing for drinking from a running faucet. He always makes his way to the bathroom, jumps into the bath and waits for someone to turn on the tap. He's always done it from an early age, doesn't mind that his head gets wet in the process! I've sometimes found him sleeping in the bath as well, obviously has been waiting a while!

natalie.polson@shetland.uhi.ac.uk - 10 Dec 2004 14:53 GMT My brother's cat Jim when younger jumped onto my lap while I held a mug of tea, unfortunately his head dropped into my mug and had the fright of his life! I dried him off and comforted him and he is now more cautious at jumping onto peoples laps, bless

One of my cats prefers to drink water from in the bath, both of them prefer to drink rain water that has fallen on to the pot plants on my deck and which, therefore, has bits of dirt floating in it.

Mine do this too. They also like to drink water which has leaked out of something, or whatever. And it's not that it's cleaner or fresher water - last night I emptied and refilled the cat cubs' water bowl, and 10 minutes later one was drinking out of a glass of water my boyfriend had left out from the previous evening!
Sheer perversity, I reckon (-:

Stanley Stempien - 28 Nov 2004 03:38 GMT my cat kept drinking from the toilet...
I bought one of thouse pet mate water fountains... from wall mart it was cheep enough and he never did it since...
However he does approch the water fountain from the rear and stick his head over the front... then drinks upside down... I dunno...

My first cat *loved* soap - she'd lick the soap dish in the bathroom, frequently, for example. To each, their own...

Mike Gallery - 28 Nov 2004 06:27 GMT Now who in their right mind would *like* the taste of soap? I can understand a cat liking watermelons or popcorn or even, as my cat, Isis, does, the yummy taste of spinach juice from a can of spinach, but soap?????

PatC - 29 Nov 2004 11:08 GMT One of my cats love to taste the water in the bath after I've rinsed it with bleach!
The other one drinks water from the drip trays under the pot plants, which often smells disgusting.
Never seem to get sick from it though!

Leanne - 30 Nov 2004 01:22 GMT > Perhaps it is Dove soap which has a high content of face cream. MLB Our cat has been licking the ivory soap in the soap dish. I often wondered if that was something in the soap that was missing from her diet or she just likes to lick soap. Cats are strange to us as we have always had dogs until someone gave my spouse this cute little kitten three years ago.

I received a reply that yes, it was safe and might be very good for the cat because it was the finest grade of oatmeal. And they sent me a case of the stuff. That cat lived to 22, by the way.

MLB For some reason my one cat loves to put his nose in or near our mouthes after we brush our teeth. He also likes doing it if we have a mint of any kind or chew mint flavoured gum. Once he realizes that we have mint on our breath, he will not leave us alone for anything. We have even tried to give him a bit of canned food to distract him from us, but that doesn't seem to do the trick. I don't know what it is about mint that he likes so much, but as most cat lovers know, cats rule and humans drool. lol

She has lapped from it, but more often she stares into it and reaches with one paw across the glass, like she's trying to get at something she sees at the bottom (or on the other side) of the glass. This usually ends up moving the glass, which jostles the water, which intrigues her more. Her sister (who died a few years ago) did exactly the same. They broke a couple of glasses over the years, so I try not to leave them around.

seem to like the ripples or maybe their reflection being distorted or something ?

I'm guessing it's the movement ... cats are attuned to anything that moves, their vision is geared toward picking up movement as much as anything else. Water ripples create all kinds of effects that seems to fascinate them.
Once I was laying on the couch quietly engrossed in a book, when out of nowhere one of my cats flew over me and hurled herself against the wall the couch rests against. I nearly jumped out of my skin! It turned out my watch crystal was catching the sun and casting a reflection on the wall. Cats don't necessarily know or care what is moving ... pounce first, ask questions later. :-)

She has her OWN glass on the end-table that I change twice a day. I am very careful to not look at her when she is happily lapping away, and she drinks far more this way than any other way. I am convinced that she things she has been getting away with something for a very long time :)

They will all drink out of their water dishes, but will always go out of their way to drink water from our galsses. Our silver tabby, Princess, will come running when she hears the sink, then jump up to drink from the tap while it's running, sometimes at the expense of getting her head soaked while doing it.
KD - 02 Dec 2004 00:59 GMT Hee hee...
I started using covered cups with straws after a couple of episodes of one of my felines tipping my water glass on my bedside table over on me while I was sleeping, trying to get a few sips! I do change their water daily, they just wanted mine I think. Maybe they just wanted to dump water on me. :)
For the record, one of them also enjoys lapping up hot bathwater (before I've used any soap of course!). He's 14, and immediately hops up on the edge of the tub once the water has stopped running. They never drink from the tap if it's runing - too much risk of getting wet I think.
