abandoned cat

About a month ago someone asked my boyfriend to watch her cat while she
went out of town.  The cat had been abandoned, along with our dog and
another cat we placed, in a kennel he was working at about a year ago.
He found a home for this cat, Isis, with this woman.  It turns out that
the woman's been evicted and has abandoned the cat :(  She's 16 years old!
She's small and pretty, jet black.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that my boyfriend was looking after a
stray.  He and a friend got her her shots this week this week.  They'd
taken her to have her spayed and found that she already had been, so she's
been abandoned too.  She was emaciated when he found her.  We're calling
her Katie,  and she needs a home too.  *sigh*  She's so small he thought
she was a kitten.  She's actually a five year old tortie.

We live in a two bedroom apartment and have six cats and a dog already.
I really can't, in good conscience, take a 16 year old cat who's already
been abandoned once to a shelter, no matter how nice it is.  Does anyone
have any suggestions?  Can you offer any help?  Want a cat or two?  It's
so disheartening it just breaks my heart.

That stinks, Dee.  This might sound like a longshot but I am going
through something similar; trying to find homes for some strays that
have been hanging around since last winter.  I didn't want them to go
through another winter without a home so with /a lot/ of coaxing and
some wording for a flyer from a friend and a really cool name, I
printed off a bunch of flyers and hung them up at work.  The second
day I got a call.  He's going to come by and see them next week and
he's already in love with them.  :)  One has taken over my deck and
the other has taken over my neighbors deck.  They won't be too sad to
see "theirs" go... they clean up his kills almost daily.  When I
talked to my neighbor tonight he was cleaning up a baby squirrel that
the kitty had killed.  :(

Good luck!

Thanks Cheryl, that's a good idea.  The young stray is really sweet, so
maybe we'll get lucky.  The older girl is precious as well (did I use the
word "precious?"), but I think we're going to have a seriously hard time
finding someone to adopt a cat that old.  We'll probably end up taking her
ourselves and get thrown out of our apartment :/

Never say never,  Dee.  It couldn't hurt to hang some flyers for the
old girl, too, because you might get a surprise.  You have to write
the flyer with a very sad story.  ;)  I always believe in playing the
pity card when necessary. Tug on the ol' heartstrings.

I always think that maybe an older person would be a good target for an
older cat. Do you have a local senior citizen center where you could post
her story? A lot of those people can really relate to being abandonned at an
old age :(

You have no one to blame for your current dilmma but yourself, so why
come crying about it? I'll just bet you have these kinds of problems
all the time, too. You both must have the word 'Sucker' written across

Yeah... 'People like you' slammed on their brakes the other day to
avoid hitting a stupid squirrel. 'People like you' caused a four car
pile up that included me. 'People like you' sent two of the children

Interesting thing about newsgroups is that a group like
rec.pets.cats.misc will attract cat haters as well as cat lovers.
Isn't the internet great?  You get all sorts of different points of
view whether you want them or not.

In the long run, that's probably good unless the noise drowns out
everything else.  I've seen that happen in a few groups, but they
usually settle down eventually.

Welcome aboard IBen (which I bet you haven't).  First of all, if you could
read you'd note that in my original post I specified that the cat wasn't
dropped off on me (yes, I am going to keep it ...so?)  Secondly, I've
never slammed into the back of another car in the midst of a four car pile
up, which apparently you did.  Hope you have full coverage on your
car. I'm getting ready to cancel mine and just get comprehensive...'cause
I'm able to keep control of my vehicle and don't go around looking for
other people to blame my problems and expend my rage on.

Believe me, my dear... you ARE the supreme epitome of 'other people'.
If you don't get my drift, then let me suggest starting at the the
beginning of this thread and working your way downward. You'll get it
at some point.
It's people like YOU who cause most of the problems in the world, and
most of the time you drive on, totally oblivious to the mess you've
created. And even when you're forced to stop, most of the time you're
more concerned with the blasted squirrle than you are for the kids
you've hurt. Just like this nutty lady was. Her and her 'save the
whales' mentality. I swear to God, she had a bumper sticker on the
left side of her tailgate that said "No War" and one on the right side
that said "Free Tibet". Do you understand this....? I know you do.

Actually I stated that incorrectly, not having realized that my personal
life was going to be picked apart :)  Before my boyfriend and I left for
the beach, he took his cats, and the one he was "sitting for" to his
sister's house.  We don't actually live together yet you see ...not til
the beginning of the month.  I said that simply to give an overview of the
situation that we will presently be finding ourselves in.  I don't know
how it is with you, but my boyfriend's a man, and I don't "insist" that he
do anything.

AAh, but you see I don't "have to" deal with any of these cats, I wish to,
it's actualy important to me.  It makes me feel good.  I read earlier that
you have a cat who loves and respects you.  Wouldn't he be happy to have a
friend of his own kind?  There are so many homeless cats out there, you
could help one IBen!

>  'First of all, if you could read you'd note that in my original post

Well...I must admit that I'm on drugs, and you've posted about this so
very many times now that I'm confused.  I seem to remember you saying that
some woman caused a four car pile up and that you were part of it.  I'm
not actually going to go back and check, but I'm pretty sure that's what
you said.  Then there was something about running over some ducks.  This
multi-post rant was brought on apparently because I said someone abandoned
a cat ...umm...yeah.

> > Sarcastic little f.cker, ain't I..?

Yeah but I kinda like ya :)

> Believe me, my dear... you ARE the supreme epitome of 'other people'.

Well, if you're not you, then to you you're automatically other people.
By the way, I love it when guys call me "dear" and make use of the word
epitome....and I always wanted to be one of The Supremes!  I wanted to be
Diana Ross, but my sister usually got that part :/

Have you ever watched talk shows where the host'll talk some sh.t about
someone and then they walk out on stage and everyone boos them?  They
always flip the bird at the audience and start yelling "You don't know me
man, you don't know me!"  Bahaha!  They're always really pissed off, and
it always maked me laugh and laugh.

Well that's me atchu right now 'cept for the really pissed off part mang!
You don't know me!  lol!

> If you don't get my drift, then let me suggest starting at the the

Whew...now that would require more effort than it would be worth, don't
you think? I didn't even read them all the first time.

\>  It's people like YOU who cause most of the problems in the world, and

Are you old enough to remember The Ramones?  They used to do a song called
"I'm Against It" which just came to mind.  I was really sad when j0ey
died...but that's a whole different story.  Yes, I do understand what
you're saying, but no, I don't make sure my tuna fish is dolphin free
before I buy it.  on the "free Tibet" issue, well you'd probably be more
concerned if you were a Tibetan.  I must confess that I haven't actually
given it my full attention either.... and so on.  I just happen to dig
cats, ya see?  Now, are you going to tell me that if you were driving up
the street and your cat, who loves and respects you, ran in front of your
car you wouldn't slam on the brakes to avoid hitting it?  Hell man, I
can't stop the war, but maybe I can save one poor, old cat's life.  See
where I'm coming from?

No, dear... the two children in the car in front of me got it bad. I
ended up jumping the curb and running over a couple of Mallard ducks.
Blew a tire out, too, and I had no spare. That's the only thing that

Dear rose-coloured Becky...

No, you silly little fool. This is the city. The big city. I drop back
too far and 100 times out of 100, some other individule (probably you)
will slide in in front of me. No matter how many times you drop back,
it doesn't matter. This is the REAL world, and I don't care how you
try to slick it with your dishonest technical legalistic CRAP. This
type of uncontroled emotional knee-jerk  reaction out of the clear
blue causes a CHAIN-REACTION. It instantly instills a panic and a
shock that will test the nerves of the best driver. That's why I only
jumped a curb (too bad you weren't there jogging).

This person and all those like her are a danger to themselves as well
as others. They think of no one but themselves... them and their
rose-coloured feel-good twisted world of white liberal guilt. They
should be held criminally liable on the grounds of emotional
incompetence. They have no business voting, let alone driving a car.
They cannot make the basic distinction between the value of a human
life compared to that of non-human life. On these grounds alone, their
drivers licences should be permanenty revoked.
Only a self-centered shallow bleeding hearted MORON would put
countless unseen others in danger by acting in such an irresponsible
manor, especially in the city. She's the type who would row a
already-overcrowed lifeboat back into the throngs of frantic drowning
desperates at the site of the Titanic sinking. I only wish it were her
own kids who were sent to the hospital. Tell THEM your half-baked
BULLCRAP. I'd be teaching them how to hold down the accelerator pedel,
myself personally. That and how to use a BB gun.
Warped twisted liberal deviant losers, all of you. And you know who
you are.

Yours realistically

Well, they can't say they died in vain.  I quickly collected them both
and had one with stuffing that very nite. Nothing went to waste.
I still have some leftovers if they should unexpectedly drop in.

So you got a free meal out of it. What are you complaining about?  Are
you going over to alt.ducks to post your recipe?

You know what a.shole, it's more about reaction than saving the
squirrel -and- you're supposed to travel far enough behind somebody so you
don't hit them - don't blame the squirrel or the other driver.  If you
rear-ended somebody (which, I think you probably may do all the time btw)
it's your fault for traveling too close -and- it's the fault of the person
that rear-ended you too (although, for some reason I think you may actually
like that).

Perhaps you mistake compassion for "sucker"...

Did it ever occur to you that there are folks
who really do care about beings, other than
just themselves? Or are you just another poor
insecure slob who must degrade others, in
order to elevate your pathetic self?

Your criticism is as unwarranted as it is
distasteful :(

No I didn't. There is compassion and then there's pure and utter
stupidity exercised in the name of compassion. I know the difference.
Apparently you do not. You have my sympthies.

> Did it ever occur to you that there are folks

Yes. They're called liberal democrats and they love to place their
corrupt fingers into my wallet without my permission. Really though,
like I said, well-directed compassion is fine and dandy. But poor
choices in this area equals 'sucker' from where I sit. That's why
these people find themselves in their current dilemma. Because they
are the kind to buy every story, get screwed over and then say it was
because they were 'compassionate'. Then people like you line up to buy
and the transaction is complete. Well, sorry. This is IBen Getiner. NO
SALE.

I degrade no one. I simply call it like I see it. Like they made it.

Perhaps if you feel good folks are to be
despised, you should think about moving
to someplace more to your liking... say,
Afghanistan, or the like... and perhaps
joining the Taliban... then you'd feel more
at home with scum such as yourself, who
don't give a damn about life, or liberty, or
compassion, or any other of the qualities
that civilized man embraces. A pity your
life is such a cesspool that you have only
hate to embrace....  A pity you were born
too late ~ Hitler would have loved you!

You are a liar. You (as well as all the other cowards) just hate me
for my stance on declawing. That's all. At least be adult enough to
put it all on the table!
You're nothing but a cowardly pansey-azzed lying creep. You're one of
those yellow dead-beats who has nothing better to do than to go around
slandering people you have not the courage to face.

hi Simon's Mom,

We've been trying to contact you for a few days now.  We were very
excited when you said that you'd take in little stray Katie.  Of course
we'll be disappointed if you've changed your mind, but please let us know!
Please call either Luis or me, or write back to me.  If you're not going
to take her, we need to desperately redouble our efforts to find her a home
because we stopped looking when you stepped up and luis is moving shortly.
Thanks!

Dee

We live in Maryland folks, and have two female cats, a five year old
tortie, and a 16 year old jet black.  They're both small and friendly and
desperately seeking homes as they've been abandoned by their owners.
The sixteen year old has now been abandoned twice :(

Thanks for any help

Dee,

If you have to make an internet plea to someone that said they were
going to adopt this cat just to contact you, I would ditch this person
and continue looking. I would never adopt to someone that can't be
bothered and apparently doesn't seem excited enough about the cat to get
back to you for days. While the idea of finding a home for these cats on
the internet is a nice one, you also have to be VERY careful. You should
be checking vet references and asking a lot of questions and not just
accepting people's word for things.

When I was desperate to find a home for Mister Mistopheles last year,
even though a lot of people sounded like good candidates at the outset,
after a lot of investigation it was clear that there were many that were
not the *right* home or a good home for various reasons. If you
remember, you had decided that since Ted in alt.cats had offered to take
him that it was a done deal and that would be fine, but it is clear that
Ted was NOT the right home. He is incredibly ignorant about cats, has
allowed a new cat to wander off into unfamiliar territory and go
missing, used Hartz for flea control, feeds the crappiest food out
there, does not do slow introductions, and even posted an ad threatening
to kill a cat if he wasn't adopted because he was bothered by behaviors
that are normal for cats and were caused by his ignorance to begin with.
He is also a borderlne collector that no doubt will cross that line in
the next few years. Althougb I'm sure your intentions were good, you
couldn't have been more wrong by trusting what you saw on a screen.

At this point you might be feeling defensive, but I hope you get past
that and understand that the reason I say this to you is because you
have to be *so careful* finding homes for cats and these cats absolutely
depend on you to do that. You really have to check into people and not
assume they'll be fine because you've exchanged some pleasantries on the
net. Things are not always what they seem.

Post a "personals" ad on a local message board (such as
[yourstate].misc, or [yourtown].misc). I've done this and found great
homes for kittens, and replied to an ad and gotten the most amazing
animal for my recently-widowed dad. Start off with something like
"attractive cuddly female seeks loving home" and go from there.
(Cuteness sells.)
Back before my folks figured out the neurtering routine, we had a
cat factory. Lived on a busy 2-lane street with lots of commuting
traffic. When the kittens got old enough, we'd put out a sign: FREE
KITTENS ~ MUST GO BY SUN. We'd get a few lookers on Friday, more on
Saturday, and steady traffic on Sunday. If there were any cats left
we'd take the sign in, and put it out again next week.
