Just curious.. I asked a question the other day and it seems I can't
step a foot right. I thought I was pretty good to my cats.
I spent thousands on an enclosure so they can play outside safely and
not harm birds.
I buy them the best food and toys.
I spend every hour I'm at home with them. They sleep on my bed at night.
But, I'm a lousy cat owner because..
I won't find a new place to live since the landlord/roommate doesn't
like cats inside unattended..
I leave them in the enclosure unattended..
I mean come on, cats can look after themselves for a few hours a day.
They need to have some freedom. I'm a pretty good owner compared to the
owners of the cats you see roaming the streets all hours of the day.

Cats confined outdoors are unable to find proper shelter in bad
weather - *you* have to provide it, and it's hard for humans to
provide shelter that the cats will find suitable.

Been there, done that. The best solution: become your own landlord.
Rates are very low, now is the best time in many years to buy your own
house.
Also around my mortgage is 1/4 to 1/3 of what my rent payment would
be. My mortgage is about $600 per month. Rent is 4 - 8 times that
amount. Why spend that kind of money to rent when it so much
cheaeper to buy?

I was a bit upset about some answers you got.
I think you are doing an excellent job with and for your cats.
As long as there are two together they are fine. Make sure they can hide in
something like a big old dog house and put a thick old blanket inside too.
Your circumstances may change, but for the time being I think it's ok the
way you do it, you have no other choice, have you?
Btw I was very sorry when I learned about how you lost your first cat.
All the best with your furballs, and, they are not gods but great
companions!

Some of my cats will huddle together some of the time, but it would
take only one blizzard to reduce two cats to one if it occurred when
they weren't willing to huddle together. Or, since small animals
don't put out enough heat to do much good in a large dog house,
perhaps even reduce the count to zero, depending on which way the wind
was blowing.
I think multiple *small* but well insulated, and possibly artificially
heated shelters would be a better bet if the climate is harsh. I have
a rectangular metal heating pad sold for putting inside pet beds - I
suspect that two small shelters with heated beds would do nicely in
most cold climates for two cats. I think I would make the shelters
just large enough to hold both cats in case they did want to huddle
together, but still provide them the option of separate accommodations
if they didn't. I'm not sure what I would do about the wind and
blowing rain/snow issue, but putting the shelters close to and facing
a wall would probably go a long way toward solving it.

My cats are deeply offended by that comment, but they look down on you too
much to even respond. ;-)

Ultimately, only you can make the determination of how safe **YOUR**
cats are in **YOUR** enclosure. There was no implication you're a lousy
cat owner, at least from me.

>"..cats can look after themselves for a few hours a day..."
Unless your previous home exploded or you had to find a place to live in 4
hours or less, you had to be aware of some kind of conditions said landlord
uttered to you about any pets. Therefore, if you were going to share living
quarters with a landlord/roommate who didn't want the cats inside while you
were out, then you don't move in! Unless you live in an 0 crime area, you must
think about possibilities in terms of the cats' safety. It's true that people,
say in certain parts of Vermont, USA and other parts of the globe do not lock
their houses or cars, zillions of other people in other parts of the planet, do
lock their cars and their houses. So...back to the issue of leaving the cats
alone - unattended - in your backyard. That's a risky deal. Anyone can come
into the backyard and taunt them, hurt them, or take them. It IS possible.
True, they could smash a window and break into said house, but it's less
likely..especially if one doesn't know that there's cats in the house. I just
wouldn't want to chance it.
