Okay, cats hate vacuum cleaners. Not surprising, since they make a lot of
noise and cats have those sensitive trumpet ears. But...
Last week I was in the basement using a power saw to cut lumber. The thing
is godawful loud; and there is the cat, peacefully curled up on a barrel not
six feet away. I swear she slept through the whole thing.
Can anyone explain?

Vacuums are on the floor and move from room to room. If you were on the
floor and that noisy suck-thing kept following you around, wouldn't you be a
pit frightened of it????
Also, it might be the iar movement that firghtens them, not motor the noise
that we hear. Moving air makes noise too, but most of which we lesser
beings cannot hear.

Especially if it is one of the robotic vacuums:

I would point out a cat has senses that are more sensitive than a
human, it sense stuff like the vacuum is moving towards her,
that it is making noise, and that it is making the floor vibrate.
When you're using a saw the saw is on a probalby on a table or stand,
not on the floor like a vaccum is.

Cats are wonderful and mysterious. I would like to know why mine, who like to
jump into a sink to play with running water, won't go near their recirculating
fountain. Mystery!

Some cats are pretty oblivious to noise, and vacuum cleaners too. My old
cherokee loved to be vaccuumed with the hose attachment. He'd follow me around,
waiting on me to stop and vacuum him.

him! he jumps on it and attacks the pipe sometimes! LOL
one of the others runs off and hides!

I dunno. My cats freak out when I vacuum, but aren't alarmed when I use a
loud blender or popcorn maker. Must be like MM Jeep says - it's on the
floor.

cats are funny :-) now a popcorn maker you would think they would be
nervous of!
none of my 3 take any notice of fireworks, they are indoor cats, but we live
up high and some of those bangs make me jump!

I've had cats who get very nervous about fireworks, thunder and
lightning, etc. The difference between a vacuum and a popcorn maker?
It's on the floor, the cat is also on the floor.
IMHO it is more the presence of the vacuum on the floor than
the noise. Remember a cat is also on the floor, only inches off the
floor on feet that are only inches in length.

Our Kitten loves to chase our Dyson...
Our other two cats scatter and hide...

I once had a cat who so didn't care about the vacuum, I had to
nudge him out of the way with the vacuum! He'd glare at me and
move a few feet away.

When I was a kid, we used to have an old grey tabby cat who loved to be
vacuumed -- with the hose, of course. I think it pulled loose all the
old hair that was getting ready to fall out.
He would just roll around in ecstacy while we ran the hoses over him.

LOL...my cat would have heart failure if I ever attempted that. Just
hearing me take the vacuum out of the closet sends her fleeing under the
bed.
