The topic pretty much says it all. After being here and having normal
litterbox habits for a year Max Jr. has started to pee and poop on the
floor.
When it started he was diagnosed with a urinary infection and he was
treated for that and eventually he stopped his bad habits. A few months went
by (he is on on prescription cat food to prevent urinary blockage) and then
he started again.
He will go for  few days without having a bowel movement and then he
goes on the floor even with a clean litterbox in the same room. The vet says
ther is nothing physically wrong with him now.
I switched to an unscented litter in case the stuff was bothering him
but it didn't make a difference.  I am seriously stressed as a result of
this. My house smells very bad and I am worried about my kitty. Does anyone
have any advice?? Thanks. -   Rob McFee    hmcfeen628@rogers.com

Sounds like it might be painful (or at least uncomfortable) for him to have
a bowel movement. Mine have a bowel movement at least once a day so going a
few days sounds like he might be constipated. I suppose he could be holding
it for some reason until he realllllllllly has to go but either way it
sounds like he's associating his pain/discomfort/problem with the litter
box. It hurt to use the box in the past when he had a uti so it's not a
stretch for him to associate the box with his problem again this time.

Have you told your vet that he's only going every few days?

Is there anything unusual about his poop, a lot of hair in it, blood on it,
very light/dark, hard/soft, unusual odor?

If you only have one litter box, add another one - in a different
location.  If the box(es) are covered, try removing the cover.  Also,
try a litter with a different texture.  If the cat has been declawed,
that could be the problem (no cure for that).

I would try another vet, that doesn't sound normal.  Is the cat taking
in food and water? If  food/water is going in then something should
coming out each day.

Thet vet may need a stool sample and a urine sample.   I would also
measure how much food you're giving the cat, and make sure the
cat is eating it that another cat in the house is not scarfing it up.
