We went walking a little before noon, 48?F with breezy winds of
winter soon to be. A brave little Road Runner (New Mexico State Bird)
was running a little ahead of us stopping and watching, unafraid and
curious. We could see it and it could see us but the cats had no idea it was
there. We walked along between weeds and cactus, watching the cats
exploring unusual items and watching the Road Runner watching us,
ducking it's head and running five feet or so and stopping. The ground
still muddy from all the rain we've been having. Various cactus of various
shapes and sizes. I was able to grab a cat and hold it up to see how it
would react when it saw the Road Runner. She couldn't wait to get down
to chase it but the Road Runner didn't go far, It hopped to the top of
a tall cactus and stood with ruffled feathers daring the young cat to
climb and see if it could be caught. We walked along thinking the cat
would follow but she was tempted to stay, the bird being so close. When
she looked like she was about to climb the cactus we called and whistled
until finally she gave up hope of having bird for dinner and ran to us.
The Road Runner was still watching from it's perch as we headed home to a
good meal and a warm fire.
