one way in which cats are different from dogs

I know there are many, but I've always been a dog person and am a
first-time new owner of a kitten.

So, I'm still giving her medicine for a "cold" (URI) and she doesn't
seem to mind it, but with a dog I would just tap on the floor and it
would come up to me.

I try the same way on kitty tonite and she crouches in stalking stance,
ready to pounce.

That's somewhat related to another difference between cats and dogs.
Dangle a morsel in front of a dog, and they'll be all over it.

Try to interest a cat in something and unless it's really hungry, it
might sniff at it, it might play with it a little, but it probably
doesn't care.

At least that's what I've observed.

And I haven't given kitty one scrap from my plate.  She doesn't even
bother trying to jump in my lap when I'm eating now.  She used to do
that, but it was probably as much for attention as it was what I was
eating.

I had salmon tonite and she was perfectly behaved.  Maybe her good
behavior is a product of discipline and not cat behavior.  I knew a
rottweiler that was similarly well-behaved.  I forgot to feed him one
day and he must have been starving.  What clued me in was that he was
very calmly sitting stil yet intently watching me eat dinner with a
certain pleading in his eyes.  He didn't bark, try to jump on the table,
obsessively beg or anything else.  Any other dog I've ever known that
begged for table scraps it wouldn't even have struck me as odd, but Mr.
Rottweiler knew he wasn't gonna get people food.

My Sammy never met a food dish he didn't like (unless it was Iams.)

Cats ARE different from dogs, but cats are different from other cats, too.
My cat Bonnie would not touch a slab of roast beef or salmon if I put it
right by her food bowl.  And she will only eat cat food of the seafood
varieties.  She loves catnip and cat grass.  And when called, she'll come
only IF she really feels like it.

Well, it was hit & miss at first. I was with Sammy 4 hours after he was born
and he came home with me 2 months later. It was hit & miss at first. I had to
learn that he preferred Fancy Feat seafood flavors and later allowed me to
serve roasted beef.  No Purina, 9 Lives or Whiskas for Sammy.  He's the boss!

Major difference...  Cats purr; dogs don't.

My last cat growled like a dog and rarely purred.  My current one finally
started purring all the time after 7 years.  Now if I can just get her to
sit on my lap instead of pacing back and forth.

My Golden would never jump up on anyone..certainly not as a way
to get food.  I think it's just training.  She would however stare
if you were eating.  :-)
My cat never begs people food either but I used to have one
that would.  He was relentless to the point of climbing onto your
lap and trying to take it out of your mouth.  In his defense, we
always thought it was funny.  I'm sure if we had wanted to we could
have trained him to stop.

The biggest difference between cats and dogs is genetics.
Dogs are pack animals and genetically prone to want to please
the leader of the pack (food provider etc.).  Cats are more
solitary.  While they will hang out in family groups they don't
rely on the group the way dogs do.  That's why dogs tend to
be more obedient (and more needy).
