Becaue they haven't figured out how to smoke it.
Cats naturally eat it, mine do but don't throw up.
Maybe your cat is trying to eat too fast, eat too much, or is
reacting to pesticides or other stuf on the grass?
Does the cat throw up it's food? Have you had the vet
check things out?

I think the eat too fast is sometimes what happens, they do not throw up
all the time. I suspect that this was down to a sore stomach, hence the
howling at that time of the morning :-) Thanks to all who replied !

I've also heard cats eat grass(as will a dog) for an upset stomach...(not
always vomiting afterward). I read a cat book, that if you have an indoor
only cat, they suggest growing a pot of grass(not the smoking kind) and have
it accessible for the cat to eat whenever....
