I have a nine week old persian with URI.....I am picking up the medicine in
the morn but she is not looking so good right now and I'm afraid she might
not make it thru the night. Any ideas how I can make her more comfortable
for night and help her breathe a lil better???

I know I am new here but this is a new kitten for me...I have only had her a
week...I hope someone has some ideas...???

When Persian cats get URI they get it bad because of the way their nasal
passage is shaped. She will probably just sit in one place for a couple of
days. She'll need clavamox or amoxycillin, clavamox is better. Some also use
olive leaf extract. You get that from a health food store. It has antibiotic
properties. Get the capsules, open one up, mix one pinky nail full of the
powder with some water and give it to the kitten with a syringe. It tastes bad
so maybe add some tuna juice to it. Make sure the kitten stays hydrated. Squirt
a little fluid is her mouth if she won't drink. You may have to get some
nutrical if she won't eat. It's sold at petstores, comes in gel form, follow
directions on package. My Persian was sick longer from URI than my regular
cats. Then he'd snort green boogies all over me for almost two weeks afterward.
If her eyes get crusty and goopy, she may also need some terramycin ointment,
sold in pet stores. Good luck.

My rescue group hasn't had much luck with clavamox.  We use doxy or
zithromax.

Steam will help the little one get through the night.  Also keeping her
eating and drinking is important.  What ever you need to feed her to get her
to eat something is ok.

Connie,

Since we have a couple of cats with URI right now I thought I'd ask
about the drugs you mentioned. Are those both antibiotics? What effect
do they have on URI's -- I thought 95% of URI's are viurses?

If you have a small bathroom, steam it up real good. You can run the hot water
in the shower for that. Leave the kitty in there for awhile and then try
feeding her/him. The steam should make the cat feel better and help with the
sense of smell so cat can eat. Good luck.
