I have a 1 year old cat.  he used to be really hyper, now he is very
sleepy and when he tries to meow nothing comes out.  He doesnt even purr
anymore.  We recently had gotten a kitten but he loves the new kitten.
They play all the time.  What could cause him to not be able to meow.
and go from hyper to calm?

Hyper to calm is normal for a maturing kitten.  All I know about not
meowing is that some cats just don't: I don't think my Spooky has
actually meowed in the last eleven or twelve years - he opens his
mouth and makes a sort of gurgling sound.  I've had cats that quit
purring when they matured - some of them started again some years
later.  If you are concerned, take the cat to a vet.

My 1 yr. old is finally settling down too. He hasn't stopped vocalizing
though but isn't as noisy as he had been. I have young kittens in the house
too so I figure he is running off his excess energy playing with them and he
just isn't as rambunctious as he had been when he was a kitten.

If the behavior change is more pronounced than just settling down with
maturity check with your vet. He should be due for his yearly checkup soon
anyway?

Kittens seem to settle down after they're seven months old (thankfully!!).
Our once nearly-driving-us-nuts rascal has turned into a real bore now that
he's 1 1/2. And he doesn't purr that much anymore either.
Yours still plays with the kitten, that's good.
