Does a cat with fleas scratch itself or has some kind of changed behaviour?

Hi,

I wrote yesterday about one of my white cat having black specks on
him, so I thought he had fleas.  However, I check this morning and almost
all of those black specks were gone.  So I am thinking that it may be just
some dirt that he brought up from outside.  My cat is not scratching or and
he has no sign of distress whatsoever.  Does a cat with fleas show some
external sign of distress such as scratching himself or something else?

          Thanks,

                         Richard

Sudden scratching or biting (where a flea is biting them) is a primary
indicator.  Usually it will be above and beyond normal gooming behavior and
is QUITE noticable.

Close combing can often reveal the fleas themselves or the scab-like blood
spots left over.

Comb your cat with a fine-tooth comb, particularly around the tail.
Spread the combings out on a damp, white paper towel. Cover with
another damp towel and press the two towels firmly together. If your
cat has fleas, the blood in their droppings will show up as tiny,
rust-red, pinhead-sized blobs on the towel.

Thanks BarB.  I have tried the towel thing and I do not see any tiny
rust-red thing but I do not see much black speck either on the towel.  So I
put water on my cat on the area where there is black specks and press on it
and again no change of color even after pressing on it.  So I gueess my cats
are fleas free.  Now I don't want them to go out in the morning because I am
so scared of fleas.  They are not happy about it but better be safe than
sorry.

         Bye,

                 Richard

I don't believe it - you are scared of fleas?! Get a grip, man. Fleas are
easily treated. As long as you regularly treat your cats, which is simple
and easy to do, neither you nor your cats will die because one or two fleas
jump on to them. Are you also scared of shadows?

Don't you have anything else to do than to say how people should feel or
think?  Get a life.

Yup, I've got heaps to do. In between posting that, I've got ready for work,
had breakfast, cooked my lunch, brought in a load of washing, hung another
out, put another in the washing machine, made the bed, manicured my nails
and I'm about to leave for work now.

But every now and then, I stumble across something so unbelievable I feel
compelled to take a few seconds out of my busy schedule to comment on it.

Like someone being scared of fleas, for instance.

Have a nice day :-)

Man, you'd be scared of fleas if you knew that they were the principal
vectors of some of the nastiest diseases you're ever likely to NOT want to
catch.

Not an irrational fear, at all - especially in these Saddam days...
