I have 2 51/2 month kittens (tom called socks, queen called tippy) and their
mum Queenie. On thursday the kittens went to the vet to be neutured (socks was
castrated). When Queenie saw them she didn't like the smell and started to
snarl and spit. During the evening she went for each of the kittens, to the
extent that she shoved her nose up socks bum and bit where the vet had operated
(the wound seem to be ok). Is it normal for a mother cat to be such a grumpy
girl after being away from the kittens for a day? Its now been 24 hours and
she is in a perminant snit at the moment.

I've noticed that when one cat comes home from the vet, the pets at home act
nuts around him. I think it's that chemical smell that was carried back in
the fur. Give it a couple more days.

They probably smell very funny to momma. And I mean VERY funny. Betadine,
sutures, some weird human smell. Smells bad enough to my human nose, I can't
imagine how bad it would be to the more sensitive cat nose. And she knows
they have had something done to them.
Give it a few more days. The smell will wear off and they will all be happy
again.
