Does your cat have a fascination with string?

I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that owns a
cat that isn't attracted to string?  My cat (Russian Blue) changes
from tranquil to excited once that string is brought out.  She's
obsessed with putting it in her mouth, constantly making biting
movements towards it.  One time the string I was holding got away from
me, and she quickly proceeded to devour it all.

Where do cats get their obsession with string?  Is it part of
their DNA?  I'd love it if there was a scientific explanation for
this.

YES. Just last night I tried to take up knitting. It was impossible. All four
cats were all over me. They haven't been that interested in crafts since I
tried to sew pads for the cat carriers that were laced with catnip.

Yes, cats love to play with string, rubber bands, aluminum foil "icicles"
from Christmas trees, etc.  But, beware!  All of these items can be deadly.
In fact, you mentioned that your cat "devoured" string.  You are fortunate
that it did not become twisted in her intestines.  Watch these objects very
carefully, and only have string or cord out for the cat to play when you are
attached to the other end.

My Siamese cross likes string but even more so he loves dental floss.

He is truly obsessed with dental hygiene as he will literally snatch the
dental floss from my hands as I try to use it so intent is he on dental
hygiene and the like.

Mine liked string until she accidentally strangled herself on it.  Now
she's dead, and has a markedly decreased interest in string.

Do you really think that is funny?

Please don't let your pets play with string, rubber bands, shoelaces, etc. I
had a kitty chew a shoelace while we were asleep... we woke up and kitty was
obviously sick lying on the cold basement floor. She died in the car on the
way to the vet.

We had one of those infa-red light's and it's a brilliant game for the cats
at night especially, lol.  They chase it when I run it up the wall and all.

That's Mischief's FAVORITE toy, a shoelace.  Her eyes get all wide, I
call it the bug-eyed look

She also loves thread, especially when I'm cross stitching or sewing.
Now since I work for a vet, I'm very careful to not leave them lying
around.  I once caught her playing with a length of thread and I took
it away and said, "STOP THAT!!  Do you know how much a
bowel-obstruction operation costs???"

Cheers,

Kristi
