I was showing my 2 year male some affection by patting him when all of a
sudden when I went to lift him up he grabbed hold of my face with both claws
and bit my forehead and at the same time??
Now this is the first time he has done anything like this so I was quite
shocked.
Does anyone know why they do this?
Thank-you for your help it's must appreciated ;-)

Lots of good suggestions already but I have to ask...are you
sure it was aggressive? Sasha grabs my hand with her claws
and gives me a little love bite as a kind of thank you don't stop
yet. It's like she wants to pull my hand back in so I keep
brushing or petting. Not all bites are aggressive. Cats bite
each other when they are grooming.

My cat Paloma will do sort of the same thing. I think she means to be
affectionate, but it does get a little rough sometimes. I never scold her
as I don't believe she means to be mean. I have heard and read that some
cats have a low threshold for touching and tend to get excited.
Sometimes when she gets wound up, her eyes are like large black saucers and
looks for a place to "get me", usually on my right shoulder for some reason;
habit I guess.
I guess it is just a quirk.

It sounds like your cat was surprised at reacted quite typically.Although he
may not have responded like that before, now you know to NOT surprise him by
lifting him up quite suddenly, Try it slower next time and see what happens.
Also, many cats appear to be quite relaxed/content (whether you're patting,
brushing, kissing or holding them) and will suddenly display anger or hostility
and lash out. That is also quite natural. Check out Google for a couple of
cat behavior sites and learn! :-)

Maybe he was overstimulated. I had a big cat who would attack with claws if I
petted him too long. I always had to watch him for signs of "You can stop
petting me now". Ears back slightly, or thwacking his tail up and down. I don't
know why he was that way, but he was till the day he died at 17.

My cat attacked me out of the blue while I slept for a couple of weeks once. He
was so gentle before. My cat was in a bad mood because a stray cat was spraying
outside the window. Maybe your cat is angry about something and is displacing
his anger to you? or maybe his tummy hurt when you lifted him? or maybe he'd
just had enough petting? Generally they give you a warning first. I would be
cautious picking him up. Give him his space if he gives you any warning.

Well, if my owner slept through two weeks, no food, no water, what do you
expect? LOL

I'm just curious how you sleep so well...

One of our cats will strike with his paw to my
forehead but hold the position without scratching
me, but he is very serious. If I make a noise like
a hurt or scared kitten she will roll over and look
at me like she is a kitten too, very cute. She was
raised with aggressive cats and a pit bull so I
think she is just used to being startled and attacked
without warning. But the little noise has worked
every time so far. He also gets aggressive sometimes
when I have to put him down. She is very attached
to people and doesn't much like other cats.

Smokey does this all the time.
When we are playing "rough" with him (not hurting him, just
tussling--he seeks this kind of play because, as a feral, he's used to
stalking and fighting prey, and we don't want him tormenting Nox and
the kittens to get out his urges for rough play, and he knows enough
not to inflict injury on us) he puts a paw on each of our cheeks,
raises his mouth to our nose, and works his jaw up and down in an
imitation of a bite--but Smokey never actually breaks skin. It's a
light touch of tooth to skin to simulate "I'm biting you now, ok?"
Smokey does this to show off "how fierce he is."
It's not so much an attack, as an aggressive posturing.
I might be more concerned about this if the cat is biting for real,
causing pain to you or drawing blood. If that's the case, then he's a
little too excited and needs to be given the opportunity to calm down.
Maybe he is overstimulated.
Smokey once--only once--actually bit. He spent the next few hours
crying and following us around to make sure we still loved him after
the bad thing he had done. He knew damn well he'd done something bad,
and...what if bad kitties don't get to live inside any more?! He's
never bit since.

Two of my cats over the years have seriously attacked me. One scratched
my face with his right paw and when I didn't flinch scratched me with his
left one. I looked like an Indian with war paint. I looked him in the eye
and
stayed right in front of him. He rolled over and never scratched me again.
He did however bite my nose several times while sitting on top of our
truck. I'm not sure why my wife thought that was so funny. Perhaps that I
got close to him after the first bite and didn't learn my lesson...
