A stray ginger kitten showed up at my back door last week,  guessing about 8
weeks old , mooched some cat food from the neighbors and started feeding it
( it was very skinny ) . It has some flesh on it's bones now but it has an
eye infection ,  I'm not familiar with cats, if I took it to the vet and had
it taken care of how much money could I spend or what is the chance of it
clearing by itself ?  He is very affectionate and lets me check him out
without any fussing , the  easiest  foe me would be to take him to the pound
but I would like too give him a chance .

Call a local vet and ask.  They can't give you a firm price since
they won't know whats wrong but they can give you a minimum
costs and hopefully you will find one that can give you a break
since it's a "rescue".

If you decide you can't take it to the vet or if you do and decide
you can't keep it...look for a local rescue group.  Most of them
will take the kitten and see it gets placed no matter how long
it takes.  The "pounds" often have too many and can't afford
to keep them indefinitely.

Thanks for caring about this little ball of fur.

I wouldn't bet on the infection clearing up by itself, but an antibiotic
cream is only a couple bucks at the vet; apply a couple times a day for
a week and it should clear right up (you realize I'm just relating my
own experiences with kittens/eye infections).

While you're there, have the vet do a good once-over.

The eye infection does not cost very much, a good ointment from the vet will
help. But the visit itself costs. On the other hand the cat needs wormed
too, so you can get this done within the same visit. This is not too
expensive either. The most expensive thing is the neutering, it *has* to be
done though. Think about this carefully, if you can't get it done then try
and motivate some friends/family of yours to take the little one.

It is important to have eye infections checked ASAP.  Most can be easily
(and inexpensively) treated, but some eye infections can rapidly progress
and even result in blindness if left untreated.

How about adopting this little cat?  You said you are not familiar with
cats, but we all started out like that at some time -- and you sound like
you are a caring person and would probably find that you will soon derive as
much out of the relationship as the cat will.  If you do adopt, please (1)
absolutely *do not* even consider declawing, (2) get the cat spayed or
neutered as soon as possible, (3) get a litter box and lots of toys, and
help your cat be an indoor-only cat.  Many of us on this group will be glad
to answer questions if you do decide to adopt.  Another good newsgroup for
questions is rec.pets.cats.health+behav.
