I'm trying this out, but one of my cat cubs thinks it's for playing in,
and the other's trying to eat it. Any clues about how to get them used to
it?
I've previously used about 10 different types of litter ranging from clay
clumping to white chemical crystals, and they've been unbothered by the
change. This was has them beat - but I don't want to waste 17 lb of the
stuff!

Have you tried to mix some of the other litter with this one? -- or possibly
even spread a layer on top. Have they used it *at all* as litter and not as
food/playtime?

When you change litter it's best to do it gradually by mixing some new with the old.
There's no need to make a quick transition.
