Hi...

I have a 2 year old fawn abyssinian male.  He has been sneezing intermitantly
for the last few days, ever since he came back from the "pet hotel" where I had
him and my other cat boarded for a week.  He is still eating (not quite as much
as usual), drinking and playing so I haven't taken him to the vet yet.  Should
I have done so?  He has clear bubbles coming out of his nose at times as well.

Does he have "cat flu"?

Thanks for any advice...

My go run and when a human dares to sneeze in the house.   Of course
nothing  happens when these same cats sneeze.

Take the cat to the vet.   The cat may have an upper respiratory
infection which is "easily" treated.

If you've ever tried giving a cat medication you'll know why I put
easily in quotes.

Thanks...if I hear him sneeze one more time tomorrow I will do that.  I don't
want to take any chances with this cat...he has been such a lifeline and
comfort to me after I had knee surgery last year and through my continued
struggles.

Oh yes...I do know what that is like!! LOL  It will be quite fun I am sure.

Hi Francine,

The distemper vaccine usually comes in a 3 or 4-pack with vaccines
against the viruses that cause cat URI's. Sometimes though, your cat
will get get it anyway!

We brought a cat home for the Humane Society with a URI. We kept him
secluded from the others and all was well. Our mistake was 6 mos later
when he got the virus again and we did not seclude him. We had five
sneezing, sick cats... OMG.

Bottom line -- I would consider isolating him from your other cat until
he is better. If it is a regular URI, he should be over it in a week or
two.

Good luck!

Rhonda

You can isolate the cat if you want to but odds are the other cats in
the household have it already.

Take a rectal temp. If it's more than 39,5 it's probably viral. Sounds like
an allergic reaction to me, though.

My kitty is due for his vaccinations anyway so I will ask the vet about all
this then.  He seems over all the sneezing since yesterday though...and is
playing at top speed again, eating much better as well.  Milo is the kind of
cat that demands almost constant attention when we are home apart from the
occaisional nap so it is easy to see when he isn't feeling his best.  He is
constantly bringing things around to our feet to play fetch with or jumping on
our laps for petting and kneeding.  I read that abyssinians weren't lap
cats...this one sure doesn't fit the mold!  He is the most affectionate cat
I've ever had...:)
