Hi..
I recently moved from a house to an apartment.
Whilst getting the apartment settled, we had friends look after Kurt at our
old house so as not to upset him too much by moving him twice.
Anyway, when we got him to his new home, I noticed what looked like a dog
bite on his hind right leg. The wound was already almost completely
healed.. so I decided a vet visit wasnt necessary.
I kept my eye on the wound, which looked to be healing nicely day by day..
then I forgot about it..
This morning I found a droplet of watery blood on the floor, and when I
checked the cat, there is a huge open wound on his leg, in a different spot
from the original wound..
I will be taking him to the vet, but was wondering if this second wound
could possibly have anything to do with the litter I am using???
It's called Catsan made by Masterfoods. (I'm in Australia).
The packet says it is made from silica gel crystals with added freshener
Is anyone aware of any skin complaintss cause by silica???
Please help! the leg looks very sore! I cant get hiim to a vet until
Wednesday due to cashless... called the vet, but because I am new to the
area and unestablished client, he wont offer a pay later option as yet..
I feel so guilty now!!! :(

Hi Shakra,
I don't know if silica can cause such a wound -- I know on some websites
it does say it can cause skin irritation. It seems that the inhaling the
dust is more of a worry. Maybe your cat is especially sensitive to it.
Just in case, I would definitely change litters immediately.
In the meantime, have you treated the wound? I would clean it once very
thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide, then apply iodine or betadine to
reduce the chance of infection. Peroxide should only be used once, or
again if the wound becomes very dirty, because it cleans away the good
and the bad stuff that's going on. It does not allow a scab to form.
If it starts looking infected -- beg, borrow, or steal to get your cat
to the vet!
Good luck with your kitty.

my thought was he had another wound on the other leg and it abscessed. the
abscess ruptured. Get the cat to the vet!

this was my thought.. sort of..
it looks like the skin has been torn or split.. so you could be right.. I
hope to God not.. but I have already started the begging process by offering
my credit card number so they can get their money on Wednesday.. which is
only three days...
I told the vet assistant, I'd rather them offer me some assistance TODAY so
I am not coming in to have the poor bugger leg amputated or something
nastier due to leeaving it for those extra few days....
GEttingg worried now : ( feel terribly guilty,,, but he seems to be
happy.. and not really in pain, although he is probablyy feeling very
uncomfortable.. and keeps licking it.. (will this make him sick inside
too>???)
is it true cats saliva has antibiotic properties???

All saliva has mildly healing properties - where do you think the instinct
of putting your finger in your mouth if you cut it came from? However,
there's mildly healing, and then there's real antibiotics ...
Don't you have an emergency vet nearby?

i found a 7 days a week service.. opens in an hour.. I've been ready to go
all day.. : (
They said they'd call me back.. but I'm just going to go there and when they
see that I am genuine and he is so cute.. and how nasty the infection is
getting, they might help me.. I hope they have it in the goodness of their
heart
fingers crossed...

Sounds an abscess from the bite. It probably healed over and appeared fine
but festered until it burst. Clean it out well with peroxide and put some
triple antibiotic cream on it until you can get him in to see the vet and on
some antibiotics. If he starts running a fever or has other symptoms (not
eating, lethargic etc) I'd get him into an emergency vet.

just wanted to say a great big THANKK YOOU to all who offered advice..
I think it is an abcess that has burst...
we have found a lovely vet who is happy to help, so he's off to the doctor
tonight!
Thank goodness he's still eating, playing and seems not too concerned as he
has been keeping the wound clean (although I'm sure all those germs in his
tummy cant be good)
anyway.. he'll be on medication as of this afternoon...
So THANKS! from me!
And an even bigger THANKS/PPPPPPPUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEOUUUW! From
Kurt-eous!
