TOOTH PROBLEM

My cat who is now 16 yrs old, has a black canine and it is loose, obviously
severley infected and dead.  I noticed the front of her face is swollen and
her eye above the tooth is weeping quite a bit.  I am fearful of two
things - the vet saying she would have to be put down, and the cost of
having whatever the problem is repaired.  Can anyone provide me some insite
on what they think is happening?

Thanks

IMO The tooth will have to come out and she will require some
antibiotics.  Then, Hopefully she will be OK

This happened to my dad. He just had a bad tooth that had to be pulled. His
face swelled up along with his eye on that side. He was in soooooo much pain.
They yanked the tooth, cleaned out the infection, gave him antibiotics and he
was fine. Your cat is probably in pain. Take her to the vet, $35 visit,
extration $15, anesthesia ?, antibiotics $10, maybe xray or blood work up.

I'm glad you didn't have to have your Dad put down....

where do you live? Before my baby Henri died from kidney disease
4yrs ago they told me {vets} he had a bad tooth  so I asked around a bit as
this vetwas a bit too expensive at a $100,  but the cheapest I could get,
was $85
and when that didn't work a few weeks later he had another out, and all the
time it was the kidneyfor $170 I could have got him a set of false teeth

My 5(?) year old rescue cat, Maddie, was just in to have her teeth
cleaned. The had to pull 4 teeth that were full of cavities and she was
put on antibiotics the total cost was only 149.00 (US). She still isn't
happy tonight they did it this afternoon

$149 is a very god price.  I just had 4 canine teeth and one other tooth
removed from my Mario and the cost was over $600 (US).

Wow...it took a lot of your ignoring the situation for the tooth to get this
way.  Please be advised that this cruelty is causing your cat pain and is
helping your cat to become more sick.  The bacteria/infection from the tooth
can (or has already) spread.  The best thing to do is to IMMEDIATELY take the
cat to the vet. Waiting to see if the problem will take care of itself is not
the way to go.

Many vets will work on payment plans. The sooner you address this problem, the
more chance your cat has to rebound from this.  Please take the cat to the vet
NOW.

From your description, it seems very apparent that the cat is in a
fair amount of pain. Shouldn't fixing that be your number one
priority?

If you cannot afford to have the cat, you should find her a new home.
It is not reasonable to put an animal down simply because of one
infected tooth. The tooth needs to come out NOW, not later. The
infection needs to be treated NOW, not later. The cat is in pain.

Why do you care about putting down the cat if you don't care enough
about her to ease her pain? I don't understand that logic.

<G>
16 is not a seriously old age for a cat. I recently had the vet remove a
loose canine tooth from my 17 year-old calico.   I say take the cat in NOW,
get the tooth pulled, administer the prescribe anti-biotics (prolly
clindadrops), and let her get well.  In a few days the swelling will be gone
and she will be a cat again.

Depending on your vet's price structure, it might go anywhere between $85
and $120.  At her age, he might want to do geriatric blood work-up; if so,
let him.  It'll be good info for you to use as a tracking benchmark as she
continues to age.

Take your cat to the vet now. Most vets will let you pay it off. It is very
unlikely
that your cat will be put down unless there is something else badly wrong
with it.
Antibiotics and removal of the tooth should work wonders.

I sure hope by now you have had the problem fixed.  My vet said that cats do
not need the canine teeth are not need to eat with.  Please remove the pain
that cat is suffering from.  I had one cat where she had both canines
removed and lived a very happy long life.
