Depressed Cat?

Hi everyone,

Here is a wierd question...

Do cats become depressed? My cat Bastet passed away at the age of 23
years. My other cat Sebastian was raised with her since he was a
kitten.

Well now that she is gone, I've didnt' think at first he was really
effected by her leaving but lately I've noticed he has be licking his
legs and belly area a lot. So much so that the hair has gotten
thinner.

I've checked his belly and there doesn't seem to be a skin problem
that I can see. I took him to the vet and was given some spray that I
can put on him and I have also gotten bitter apple to spray on to keep
him from licking there.

The vet insists that nothing is wrong with his skin and doesn't feel
that the cat is depressed. He thinks that the fur maybe thinning out
naturally because of the summer(??) but Sebastian is an indoor cat so
I'm not sure about that.

Any opinions?

Also is it my luck or is a certain aggressive individual no longer
harrasing people on this group? I don't want to say his name but his
initials are B.B and he is from the UK.

IMHO cats do suffer from depression.   I lost my 19 year old male
a few months ago and my 13 year female who grew up with this
male seems very much affected.

Now she is alone, she was never alone previously, the male
was always there to keep her  company.

Sometimes I'll find my female calling out for  the male.

So yes, I believe cats do suffer from depression.   I have no
clue how to cure but they do suffer from it.

Of course cats can be depressed. That's part of the grieving process & cats DO
GRIEVE.

I don't think that is a weird question at all.  I'm not an expert but I
reckon that cats are definitely intelligent enough to realise when they're
companion's have gone and miss them.  I think that like dogs they sense mood
changes in their owners as well.

23 years old was a great age for a cat, BTW !

Some vets focus on the medical problems only and other vets look at the whole
picture. After 5 cats and reading 20 - 30 books on cat behavior, I believe cats
do miss their companions.  My cats always did. When my Mei Ling passed away
last year, Sammy (who had been with her for 4 1/2 years) definitely missed her.
He went around the apartment constantly, looking at all her favorite places.
He did so 'til I brought in Nellie. Now, he follows Nellie (and chases her)!

My cat Paloma was adopted at 11  mos. and she is 6 yrs old now.  When she
was adopted, we had a 25 lb. Poodle, who had been recently adopted at 8 yrs.
of age.  They hit it off immediately.  She came out of the room and met JoJo
and they kissed noses.  It was so sweet and I had no idea they would get
along so great.  JoJo had to pass away about a year and a half ago.  I am
certain she missed him for a long time.  Now she is the only pet and being a
cat, I am sure enjoys being the queen.  I felt so sad for her when JoJo left
and I gave her lots of extra love and attention.

In answer to your question....YES,
Shirley
