We're going to try to get some neighbor cats neutered.
The people who do this require that the cats be delivered
in traps. They are trying to help people by saying that the
cats are feral and everyone sort of looks the other way.
Anyway, I need some traps that are safe and aren't so
big that the anesthetic can't be administered through the
cage. I hope this is a good thing we are trying to do.
Thanks : - ?

Does this sound like a troll? It isn't really. I just
want to be able to help with feral and out of control
unspayed cats.

This isn't the best newsgroup - this would almost be a FAQ in
rec.pets.cats.rescue. There are a number of people there who are
involved in catch/neuter/release programs. Ask there to get the very
best advice.

Thanks. I left a message there. I appreciate
the guidance. I would not have thought there
was a ng so specific.

I've trapped cats before. I live in the middle of nowhere and people believe
that just cause there is a barn that the owner of the barn is always in need
of a barn cat. (I have two, both spayed, to help me keep the mice population
down.)
Just find a medium sized live trap and load it with canned cat food, but
beware, I've also trapped many skunks by accident.

Here in the usa there's a live-catch trap called Have a hart (I believe
that's the spelling). But I'm sure there are many others on the market.
As Rebecca says, bait it with a smelly treat. I use sardines. But be sure
and check it regularly; and after you catch the animal do not make the
mistake of opening it a wee bit to put in water. A cat will hit that tiny
opening hard and be through it before you can say
holyshitwhatthehellhappened.
Take the trap and the cat quickly to the fixing place.

I just want a safe trap. The haveahart traps seem to have
a spring that is too strong and no second door to make it
easier to get feral cats out.

There are variations of it. The one I use is very utile in the manner you
suggest. Shop around.

This can be a time consuming effort. I took me at least a month to catch
my _own_ cat who would not come inside, but needed some medical care.
Look for Havahart traps on the Internet--they are humane and not to
difficult to set. Try http://www.cabelas.com--I think that is where I
bought mine.
I too will be trying to catch some stray cats and try to get some help
for them. Unfortunately, I have neither the financial resources or room
at home to take in any more cats. And Jaws, my current ex-stray, would
never tolerate another cat in the house. So, those I do catch are likely
to end up at the (In)Humane Society where they will probably end up
euthanized. Too bad. One in particular looks at me as if he'd learn to
tolerate me. Who's to say that they would be better off at the (I)H S?
*I am!* I feed them, but life on the streets is tough on them. I'm open
to suggestions other than the (I)H S, but you must Email me directly, as
I do not monitor this group.
TIA and Good luck,
