I just moved to a new house. My cats are indoor/outdoor cats. Two days ago
the boy climbed a tree in the front where the lowest braches are around 20
feet up. He scaled himself back down when I called him. This morning, our
female was up there and she could not get herself down. After 30 minutes and
putting some cat food on a 15ft 2x4 I was able to coax her into walking the
plank down to me.
Any way to discourge them from getting up there in the first place?

Sort of like telling them not to groom themselves or sleep.
Cats and trees are made for each other.
You might try putting a sort of "skirt" around the tree trunk about 8
feet up.
They should not be able to jump over it. Then again they may just
figure a way to climb over it.

Get some sheet aluminum and tack that around the tree about six feet up.
This technique is used when a bat house is mounted on a tree to prevent
predators from climbing up the trunk.

I'll bet the next time she goes up the tree, she will figure out how
to get down. Is this in a fenced yard? If not, the tree may be a
lifesaver someday. MLB

I would second that. And isn't it great for a cat being able to climb trees?
One day our Tom played a big show in front of the old people's residence:
He was on top of a very high tree, the old people gathered and wanted to
call the fire brigade.
I told them not to - he was down in less than 10 minutes...
Whenever there was a big screaming going on among the crows in the nearby
forest then
I knew that he was up in a tree somewhere, great cat! :-))
