Hi all! I'd like to know if male cats have higher pitched meows and
squeak. We've been feeding a stray cat that is definitely larger than
our three female cats and by this I mean the stray has longer legs and
tail, a larger head, and bigger paws. This stray cat has never meowed,
but "squeaks" when it approaches our back door for food. It also makes
a kind of purring chortling sound. I've tried to determine its gender
and I just can't tell. Any comments or thoughts would be helpful,
especially if you have male cat(s)! :)

Hi Shari-Ann,
It seems like our larger cats have had the higher voices, male or
female! I haven't seen a relation between gender and the pitch of the
meow. Although that being said, our "squeakers" have been female.
Can you get a look at the rear? I usually look for upside-down
exclamation points, which would be female.
Good luck,
Rhonda

It could well be a male, especially if he's big. Our male makes the same
sort of sounds - but the female does too. I can never tell without looking
who's come home and is greeting me.

Hi my cat is male and it sounds like the stray is male too as they are a lot
bigger in size especially if they have been neutered. Also my can't rarely
meows. Plus the majority of stray cats are male as male cats travel a lot
further and therefore sometimes get a bit lost. Female cats tend to stay
nearer to home. Also if it gets on okay with your female cats it is more
likely to be male as a stranger of the same sex are not very welcomed.
