New kitten - help

Prove It... - 23 Jun 2004 02:40 GMT
My SO and I recently recived a cat. It's a 7 month old neuterd male.
The problem I'm running into is that I work evenings and late nights,
and need to sleep in the morning. Of course a kitten would never let
this happen.
He likes to let you sleep till about 6am, then he will whine and run
around like an insane race car (getting into things that he normaly
won't get into), and generaly be a bad cat.
Even when I get up and play with him, and feed him, he still acts bad,
and whines. This goes on till about noon.

Other then that he is a very good cat, he doesn't get on stuff, he
doesn't whine. Any ideas why he would act this way at this time, and
how I can stop it (or move it to a better time)?

My guess is that the birds outside our windows get his attention and
he is acting up because of them...

He's not being "bad"; he's being a kitten. The single best thing you
could do to help redirect his energy would be to get him a playmate.
Seriously.

I wish we could get him someone else to play with. We live in an
apartment with a no pet policy - but we were able to get him because he
is classified as a companion animal for my SO when I'm at work. (She's
disabled and doesn't work). We are only allowed on animal. We are
thinking about moving and will be getting another cat when we do.

Can't your SO play with the kitten while you are trying to sleep?

We have done this to some extent, but she sleeps on the same schedual
that I do - he keeps both of us awake. And to make things even worse,
the bedroom is his favorite room, if someone is in there, he wants in
there. Closing the door will only make him whine and claw at the door.

Well, you need to get him on your schedule.  Do a lot of play before you
go to bed (your SO might have to do this) and wind him down so that you
all fall asleep together.

Also, you need to stop getting up to play with him.  This is only
reinforcing the behavior...in other words the cat is training you.
I am glad to see you recognize this as standard kitten stuff and
are being patient with him.
Just make sure he has enough toys and ignore him even when
he is racing across the bed.

Okay. Can do. So, play with him as much as possible before bed, and
ignore him when decides to be obnoxious.
Now I just wish he wouldn't race around such sensitive areas when he's
on the bed.

I am currently fostering 4 rambunctious 3-month-old siblings, they LOVE
being on the bed with us at night - and they don't always get sleepy.  They
want to play - either with each other or they will play by themselves (they
seem to be fond of chasing their own tails, and I thought that was a d*g
trait), and when they get that way, I put them on the floor.  They are
learning that bed is not for playing, but for sleeping, at least when the
humans are there.  It usually takes 2 - 3 times each night, and then they
wander off in search of a toy to play with, or get tired of climbing back
onto the bed & settle down.

In the morning, I have taken to locking them out of the bedroom, and so they
go off and play with each other.  No crying or whining, nor scratching at
the door as they have each other too keep company.

My sixteen-year-old cat *still* does that.
