For the past few months or so, I've had the pleasure of having five
kittens (three gray & striped, one black, and one a mis-mash of black
& brown) live in various boxes in the back of my car-port. Their
mother is gray w/ brown stripes & dots and was responsible for moving
them in their boxes in the first place. The first box that I
discovered them in was much, much bigger than the one that I found the
dead kitten in.
Then the other day, the mother was suddenly hanging around w/ a bushy,
partially scratched up (on the back) brown and gray cat that my family
and I nicknamed "Fuzz." We first assumed that Fuzz was a girl when we
spotted him/her w/ a medium-sized brown & yellow kitten in its lap.
The aford-mentioned kitten, sadly died the other day.
So the next thing you know, Fuzz and the mother were leading on of the
kittens, who was sandwiched in-between the mother and the leader Fuzz,
to the bushes her my front porch. The next thing that I was aware of
was that the three cats pretty much spent the night in an isolated
spot underneath the plants and branches.
So today, I saw one of the little kittens freely walking around and
car-port. My first reaction was to take the little guy back home were
his mother "cleverly" picked a hidden little box in the back to place
her kittens. It took me about a minute or two before I realized that
all but one of the five kittens in the box were reacting to my
presence.
A pile of ants was swarming around the dead kitten as I out of anger
and confusion wanted to blame the mother and especially Fuzz for
neglecting/endangering the kitten. I even went as far as to panic and
try to take the surviving kittens w/ me in a last ditch attempt to
rescue them. Unfortunately, my parents were very upset at the idea of
me bringing in this kittens into the house (since we already have a
dog to look after).
The end result as that I moved the surviving kittens out of the small
box where I found their dead sibling in favor of their previous, much
bigger box/home. My parents soon pursuaded me into "letting go" and
allowing the mother and nature to "do the job" for me.

How old are these kittens? It would seem that if you've been
observing them for several months, they should be old enough to at
least not stay under a bush. Perhaps I'm not understanding the
sequence of events.
