The cat takes over the whole house (aka Science Diet)

Hey all,

I have a great 7 year old male cat (Jaspur) who was born and raised on the
Science Diet dry cat food, and in that time, I have never had a problem with
his urine smell in my house (I empty his litter box as needed- once a day or
every two days max).

Now that I work all day at home, I get bugged for treats (i'd give him a
little tuna in the past when I returned from my 9-6 job). He meows like
crazy and drives me nuts wanting his treat now, and since I live in a small
house (no basement), I can hear him no matter where he is, and cannot escape
the constant begging.

Well, the cat now bugs me so often (and I have important website work to do
for my income, so being distracted all the time annoys me), that he gets his
way- tuna (packed in water, not oil) treats every 3 to 4 hours, the treats
being about two spoonfuls. That's when I noticed a really foul urine smell
coming from his litterbox- and it smells like that all the time now and
makes its way to the living room (even odor sprays don't get rid of it). Has
to be the tuna, i would think. I have the big litter box with the lid and
the charcoal filter and that seemed to have helped until he started eating
more tuna.

He eats less of the Science Diet dry food, and I suddenly remembered that
Science Diet has "wet" cans of cat food with meat and gravy. Does anyone
here use the Science Diet as a type of treat or a main source of feeding for
their cat, and have that had good experience with it in terms of odor
control?

I mean, all cats (as well as every living thing) have their own smells when
they relieve themselves, but Jaspur's litter box never smelled this
repulsive in all the 7 years i've had him. Any recommendations would be
appreciated. I know I spoiled the cat- I want the quality of his life to be
great, and he's a well-behaved, great companion. It's those treats that I
ended up giving him, I think, and now he's hooked, and I hooked him. He's a
junkie, and I was the pusher.  =)

I'd definitely recommend that you give him wet cat food rather than
tuna. That's a lot of tuna for a cat to get, honestly. Not good for
'em. When my cats want "treats", they get wet cat food. :-)

Now, given that yours is likely addicted to tuna right now, you may
want to mix a little tuna juice in and gradually reduce it over time,
but I'd definitely switch to actual cat food, if I were you.

Good suggestion. Reading your post jogged my memory a little- the reason I
gave him tuna as a treat is the convenience, as I have to travel about 10
miles to the nearest place that carries Science Diet. The Wisconsin
snowstorms made me lazy last winter, and I didn't want to drive in nasty
weather, so on my way home from work, i'd go to the local convenience store.
Most always had tuna in water a block away from my house.

Not sure if the change in treats will help with the urine smell, but I think
i'd feel better to give him something healthier, and perhaps I can find a
happy medium and stock up on some Science Diet cans before the weekend that
Jaspur will crave. A good cat is a happy cat. Thanks, Laura

Oh, I can relate to that; you have no idea. :-)

You're most welcome. Also, if he hasn't been to the vet for a checkup
lately, it might not hurt to get him in. Smelly urine can indicate
infection.

I fed my Siamese (RB) Science Diet for the last 12 years of her life.
Her litterbox did not stink.  My present cat eats Iams plus Fancy
Feast wet and there is some odor.  I have been thinking about
switching.  She also adores tuna but I only use it as a special treat
when I make myself tuna sandwiches.  FYI You can order online from
Petco and Petsmark.  This might be handy if you cannot get to the pet
store in the winter.  I have the same proble.  I can get Iams at the
store close to my home so now I don't get to the pet store very often.

I think I'm almost fortunate (?) in a sense- the grocery stores in
the area and the online grocery company that I use all have utter
crap cat food. It forces me to go to the pet store.

Okay, that's not really fortunate. Never mind. :-)

forget about the type of food you are feeding the cat, you should not be
giving snacks all day long.  i put dry out at 5:00 p.m. or later, once a
day, that's it.  she does meow when i go in the kitchen but doesn't bother
me in other rooms at all.
you should just bite the bullet when you are home.  the cat will give up
bothering you all day long after a while.  i used to feed in the morning but
then i could not sleep late.  i learned quickly.  i would try slowly going
back to dry food once a day and see if the box thing changes.

To whom are you responding? It would certainly seem that you're not
replying to what *I* wrote.

I agree, Petco has a great thing with there 'bottomless bowl' feature you
just set it up once and forget it; catfood shipments automaticly, every 2
weeks.

I tried to google? up Petsmark? and got a travel company.  As a pet supply
outlet, I have never heard of it.  Odd.
