Hello all! I am new to this group, I have read through most of the posts
since January of this year, you seem to be a nice group of people who really
love there cats. I have just gotten a kitten from the local shelter. I had
a previous shelter cat for 14 years before she died. I am looking to build a
cat tree for my new kitten and was wondering if anyone had a resource for
some free plans in order to do so. ( or some place to find a real cheap
one.)
thanks in advance.

Nothing on the internet?
Maybe look in the library. index to periodicals. i'll bet there are plans in
some cat magazines. for the carpet, go to a carpet store and buy some
scraps. they're cheap.

Just a thought but what I did for a "tree" was to get some plastic
crates like milk cartoons that you buy for storage or whatever at
variety store, K-mart, ETC and connect them together in whatever
combination you like, with plastic ties, such as a small pyramid (SP)
or a step layout and let the open side of the crates exposed on the
side so they can get into them. You can put small rugs in the open
part of the crate and on the tops of them. It may not look great in
the family room but I spend a lot of time in my computer room and they
hang out there. Put it in front of a windows and they lay on it all
day watching the birds or whatever. It may not be the cheapest way to
go but mine love it.

There are many plans available free online. Just go to google, type in "cat
tree plans" and go for it. Most important is to build the base large enough
that it is sturdy. Check with your local carpet outlets and inquire about
buying scrap carpeting...sometimes they'll just give it to you. Average cost of
lumber/nails/sisal/glue is around $40 for the ones we've built. We usually wrap
at least one post in sisal and carpet the rest. They love the sisal. You're
limited only by your imagination really. We also found that buying a heavy-duty
electric staple gun made the next tree much easier to carpet. (Maybe you could
rent one, also).
Good luck! Don't worry if your first one doesn't look like it came from
Petsmart. Your cat won't care!

Hi,
I've made a cat tree for my Gorigori some months ago. I've put the
instruction here http://tiragraffi.vaivai.com (written in Italian)
I made it from scretch, there is not really need for a plan. It has been
easier than expected, and it only costs me 50 euro to buy the materials
(I've asked for price in pet shop, for a 86cm cat tree they want 200
euro!). Best of all, my cat likes it much.
Good luck,
Cristina

I don't suppose you'd be willing to add an english translation to that
webpage would you? That's a great cat tree and I would like to add it to
my site, but most of the people that go there are Americans.
In the meantime I think I'll add the link anyway and people can maybe
use an online translator to at least get an idea of how to make it.

Thanks for the link. It looks like a lot of work and a good fun
project.
I love that cat's name Gorigori.
He is one handsome boy.
He looks happy in his cat tree.
