We've  got two  that the mother
rejected.  One is  eating from  a
small bottle from PetSmart. The
other  won't drink,  even from a
syringe. Any suggestions?

Have they been seen by a veterinarian?

Call your vet. They can show you how to safely feed the little one. If push
comes to shove the kitten can be tube fed but this shouldn't be attempted
without instruction from a vet.

In the mean time try feeding drop by drop on the tongue. This must be done
very carefully so the kitten doesn't aspirate formula. Keep in mind that the
mother may have rejected this kitten because something is wrong with it.

Good luck with your kitties.

Can you give me an idea what tube feeding is?

Feeding tube. A tube that is run to the cat's stomach via nasal,
pharangeal or esophogeal entry points, or directly into the stomach
itself.

At least, I think that's what Wendy was talking about. :-)

How are you doing with the kittens?

My  wife told  me that  the woman  whose cat
rejected  the kittens wanted to take them back.
She  is the  kind of  person who doesn't like to
tell people bad news.  Thanks for you help but
they  were just  too little,  I think, and we have
so  many cats  that we  can't afford  any  more
vet  bills.  I'm ashamed  to admit  that we have
14  cats,  not  counting 4 that we are boarding.
My wife found homes for 12 kittens last week-
end in the Petco parking lot, and she screened
the  people.  I feel  bad and  next time  I'm not
going  to accept  the kittens when they are that
small.  Thanks  for asking.  I wish  I had  good
news.  All of  our cats have their shots and are
neutered.

I called the local, "no kill" shelter so see what
they would have done, so that next time I will
do better. They  said  that  they let the kittens
die because they don't have the staff or funds
to tube feed very small kittens.

The vet said  that it was very difficult for a lay
person  to  insert  a tube  and that it would be
in  the  hundreds  or thousands  of dollars  for
tube feeding two kittens for  the time it would
take for them to recover. He did suggest that
we  should  have  tried  to confine the mother
which did not occur to any of us. The mother
was  taking the  kittens out  into the yard and
leaving  them.  The  vet  said  that  giving  the
mama  cat  tranquilizers  would be bad cause
the kittens would be affected.

So are you saying that the kittens died?

I'm  not going  to press my wife, but yes I'm sure
that they died. I thought that was pretty clear but
I guess it wasn't.
