I have a cabin the mountains. through the years i have brought my kitties
with me from time to time, not to kill mice but just for a change and they
seemed to enjoy going up and down the stairs as I live in an apartment, it's
a novelty. anyway, a by product of these kitty visits is that their
instincts come out and they have killed several mice in their day.
I now have one kitty where I brought her up to the cabin. and of course she
found a mouse (not going to go into the gorey details) and had it in and out
of her mouth and i guess killed it. I never found it.
The question regards: in the fall I put mice snacks out around on the first
floor bec that's where I have noticed them (their essence). Although I
don't poisen during the spring / summer season, should I not bring the cat
up to the cabin when I do poisen. Will she be poisened if she kills
poisened mice. Do mice die right away after ingesting the poisen and do
cats actually eat mice or just kill them?
Regards, Harriet

This question was asked at Vetinfo and received a 'yes, probably'
answer: <http://www.vetinfo.com/ctoxin.html#Mouse%20Poison>.
Other sources indicate that it takes six to ten days of feeding
poisoned bait to kill the mice. The same source (and my personal
experience) indicates that the mice tend to die where you can't get at
them and stink for days.
I live in the country where mice infestation is almost universal. I
deal with it by having cats: if you have cats and mice, before long
you just have cats (and no stinking mouse remains in the walls).

If my cat could speak, that would be her motto.

Why? Cats *like* raw mouse snacks. Most of them anyway. Some of
mine even squabble over who gets to eat the one that one of them
caught. It's not always the one who did the work that gets the reward
- sometimes it's a smaller, quicker one.

so i guess that bringing cats within claws reach after poisen is out in the
Fall would be dangerous.
and....Thanx Ted, now i can picture one of them over a stove, breading and
frying mice.

Nah, they prefer 'em lightly poached. :-)
