Kitty's meow suddenly raspy - cause for alarm?

My five-year-old cat's voice, her meow, has become low and raspy in just
the last twenty-four hours. Any reason to think there might be a
problem? She's not meowing any more or less than usual, if that's
relevant, and seems just fine otherwise.

Thanks :)

H.D.

P.S.
I just decided to check her throat area for a lump or mass. There is
indeed a good sized one. Damn.

I was just going to suggest a throat infection of some sort ;-) Take her
to the vet asap, so she can get that mass treated.

Camilla,

Thank you for answering my request for help. I don't know how you manage
to read any of the posts on this ng -- I came back just now to see if
there were any replies to mine and found dozens upon dozens of cat
torture related subject headers! I had to look away. :-(

Take care,
H.D.

Killfile James Marz and the majority of those posts disappear.

Thanks, Laura. My reader, Mozilla Thunderbird for the Mac, has a
malfunctioning filter, darnit.

I just recently read that the loss of voice (ie, weakening of
voice) could be related to a potassium deficiency. Easily remedied
if it the case. A blood test would reveal it. Hope it isn't a
serious mass. :(

Oh, I hope to heaven that's all it is. I suspect not, though.
