News to me. My current cat uses two plastic litter boxes. The oldest of
which is 14 years old. Though the litter is removed and replaced with new at
intervals and the box washed, I see no reason to replace the box.

I've heard some people say that the box at some point retains unpleasant
odors. I would imagine that if the box gets deep scratches from the cat's
claws it could become difficult to clean and might retain bacteria. If the
cat doesn't object to the box I'd think it didn't need replacing unless it
was terminally grungy

I've only had this plastic box with lid about 5 years, but it is still
in good condition and as far as i can tell doesn't retain an oder. I
put a LOT of scoopable multicat liter in it, really deep so that the
uren doesn't go clear to the bottom and scoop out the lumps every day
and replace what is scooped out with fresh litter. The litter that is
left in it is clean, so see no reason to throw it out each time, just
replace that which was contaminated. I check with my daughter
frequently and she would definitely let me know if there was a
problem! WE are both sensitive odors or scents, but i am always
concerned that i might just get used to an oder and not notice it. She
comes in a few timea a week and would notice it right off if it were
stinkey.. since i now, as of yesterday, have 2 cats, will get another
box for the new one. Ms Kitty would be furious if i let another cat
use her box! <G> She is not friendly with Lucky yet and will have to
wait a while before i can let them get really aquainted.

About once every 4-6 weeks, I take out all the litter and clean out
the box with lysol or some other cleaning product approved for use
with pet products. After that I replace the litter and make it deep
for the same reasons mentioned below. Of course I scoop out clumps
and replace with a bit of fresh litter, but after a while the stench
is overpowering. I had the last litter box for 7 years until one day I
banged and broke the lid hinges against the wall when I was about to
scoop out the 'used' litter. The new box has no hinges, lol.
