Hello fellow Cat Lovers,

Anyone know of an Applehead Balinese Cattery within 100 miles of Albany NY?
I know there is one due to talking to my vet and also meeting with a sweet
young girl at a cat show who had an absolutely gorgeous one of her own.
Unfortunatly that young girl could not tell me the name of her cat's
breeder.  Please, no flames about buying pedigreed cats- I will only buy
from a home-based, small Cattery that I will personally inspect (that's why
I would prefer it be close by, so I can visit several times), I would never
support the puppy/kitty mills, AND during my life (I am 38) I have either
directly or indirectly participated in the rescue and care of 5 "mutt"
cats...  But I already own a Balinese and she is just so much more
intelligient than any other cat I have been around, as well as being so very
beautiful, a real lap cat, I just love her and want another one like her...
Thanks for any info anyone can provide.  It would be great if, as well as
posting, you would also email me at magpie_trickster@speedymail.org    just
in case I miss a post.  Thanks again,

maggie, owned by Samantha.

You can call TICA and CFA for the location of a breeder near you. However, as
applehead Balinese are different from "show" Balinese, these breeders might
register with TCA (Traditional Cat Association).

Hi Dik,

Thank you for your reply.  I have been to the TCA (or was it TICA, no I
think it WAS TCA) and there were no breeders listed anywhere near me.  The
closest I have located so far is 2.5 hours drive one way, to CT.  Since I
plan on inspecting the cattery, then going back to choose my kitty, then a
third time to pick him up, that is a lot of driving...  Also more trauma on
the kitty when I take him home.  I will try calling all these associations
instead though, incredibly enough CFA does not list breeders on its website
(at least not that I could find.)  Thanks again for the helpful advice.

Brightest Blessings,
maggie

As a quick note, sometimes you have to go further afield to
find the right breeder for you.  My Bengal boys came from a breeder
who was ~3 hours away from me.

It is a lot of driving, but it's not traumatic on the kitten.
DH and I went up to visit our breeder four times -- once to see the
cattery (we met at a show), once to visit and meet the kittens she had
chosen for us, once to just visit and get pictures, and the final time
to take them home.
It's best to tell the breeder what you are looking for in a
cat ands then let him/her match you with the right kitten.  The
breeder lives with the kittens and knows their personalities --
they're going to be a lot more successful at making the right match
than you are off the strength of one visit.
Do you have a cat already?  If not, you may want to consider
getting two kittens -- either two Balinese or one Balinese and one
pound kitty.  Cats do best in multicat homes, and the day-to-day
expenses for two are really not that much greater than for one.

Yes, well at this point it is appearing as if I have no choice anyway.
There used to be two other breeders in NY that I definitely know about but
they both closed shop.  (I would go back to Samantha's breeder but the woman
was quite old when I got Samantha and I'm sure she's passed on by now...)

Yes actually, with Samantha, I went an extra time for a visit as well!  It's
Soooo hard to wait for the kitty to be ready to come home!

Hmm, I never thought to ask the breeder to choose.  I remember when I chose
Samantha, the breeder sort of tried to discourage me, she said "Are you sure
you want this little loud-mouth?"  Cuz she was

Maggie, TICA is different from TCA. TICA is the big association where breeders
show cats, just like CFA. In contrast, TCA is dedicated to a few breeds before
they are modified by breeders to conform to contemporary breed standards. These
would include applehead Siamese, applehead Balinese, Doll Face Persian. These
cats won't do well in TICA and CFA shows, and so are often not show cats. I
think that TCA has its own web site.

>CFA does not list breeders on its website<

Maggie, you have to call their headquarters which I think is in New Jersey.

You can also join a Yahoo list dedicated to Balinese. However, I have a feeling
that their members might be breeders of the contemporary Balinese. If so, I
don't know how to look upon someone seeking an applehead Balinese.

You are doing this right way, Maggie; and I really admire you for this. You are
looking for a subset of a minority breed. So, if you do have to adopt a cat
from breeder from far away, be prepared to ask many questions. Likewise, the
breede, if he is a responsible one, should ask you many questions as well.
