Yes, I think he needs to get to the vet ASAP. Panting is not a good
sign, neither is what you described with the litter box.
Is it unusually hot there now?
Is there an emergency vet near you? I would get him looked at today.

It is a hot day. I couldn't get him to a vet today. He seems fine
now...but I'm really concerned. I've become quite attached to him: he likes
to be held, and when kitten, I carried him around constantly around the
house...he never wanted to be put down.
My wife doesn't want to take him to the vet, because she's convinced that
respiratory illness isn't that big of a deal (she says that she's had cats
with respiratory illness before, who were just fine). Plus, there's the
money issue. Screw that, I say. I really want to make sure my Mailman is
okay.
But right now, he's back to his usual self. Do you guys think he might be
asthatic?

Hi Luke,
Was it hot enough to cause a reaction like that?
The only times I've seen our cats pant was when (as a kitten) they
played too hard, or if they were extreme distress (mother cat in a
separte carrier from her kittens to go to the vet.) Could there have
been anything that stressed him out, in addition to the heat?
By the way, on hot days here we wet down our cats' ears, and sometimes
wet down the fur on their backs. Having their ears wet helps cool them
down.
I don't know about asthma. You might want to just call the vet and see
what they say about bringing her in. You can also try posting on
alt.med.veterinary.
Hope that was a one-time problem,
Rhonda
