Neutered males nocturnal habits

We bought our male kitten when he was 3 months old. We waited a little too
long by some opinions to have him neutered, but he was done at 7 months.

After a while he started doing a strange thing. At night he would jump onto
our bed and start kneeding the blanket and purring, slowly moving towards us
and finally settling down sucking the blanket as it lay on my wife. The
sound was like a rapid kissing sound.

It looked for all the world like he was pretending to feed off his mother
when he was a kitten.
He would persist at this for about 15 mins and the either curl up for sleep
or jump off the bed again.

I thought this was unique to him but the vet said young males are either
''blanket suckers or not''.

Does anyone have a similar story? Misty still does this at 3 yo.

Hi Jason,

My old boy, Julian, sucked on my blankets and shirts until the day he
went to The Bridge. He would purr, make biscuits and suck until he
fell asleep. I got him when he was only a week old and he was 19
years old when he passed, so your wife may have to put up with a
sucking cat for a very, very long time!

I, personally, think it IS a "momma" thing; their own mothers were
comforting to them, so they transfer that trust and comfort to their
adopted mommy, especially when they were taken away so young. Julian
was also neutered and I've never heard of a female cat doing this. My
husband thought that Jude had some kind of male "booby-fetish". That
STILL cracks me up!

Anyhow, I don't think it's anything to worry about if Misty is
otherwise well-adjusted. He's just looking for comfort and your wife
and her blankets are providing that just fine.

I have a neutered female - she's about a year and half. Just about
everynight that my husband and I go to bed she is right up with us, kneading
and sucking on the blanket. She has done this pretty much as long as we
have had her - it is a very serious part of going to bed :). Funny part is
she usually prefers to knead my husband, if he's not around I'll do, but
usually its him.

I know of plenty of female cats that do this, it's what all kittens do when
they are suckling,
the action of the paws stimulates the production of milk.

This is normal for cats. When I adopted Tootie, she was estimated to be six to eight months old.
When she slept, she still made suckling movements with her mouth. I felt it made her feel more
secure. After about a month, she no longer did it. MLB

Goes to show it's true girls mature before boys!
