Hey everyone,
I have a huge problem, my cats keep getting outside when someone opens
the door and I have to run after them down the street.  It happens on a
daily basis and I am terrified they are going to either run away or get hit
by a car.  What can I do to keep them in the house?  The people who keep
opening the doors are careless and have nothing to lose, is there some kind
of collar or something that can be sprayed to keep a cat away from
something?  Please help I am going to have to give them away tomorrow if
this continues.  I cannot live with this threat and I want what is best for
the cats, not me.

Any help is appreciated, thank you all.

Put a sign on the door that says warning house cat.  Do not let out!
Possibly create a second entry in your house so there is always at least one
door shut??

I am surprised that you have people entering your house that care so little
about your feelings as to let your cat loose.

Long story short, it was my ex who was really having the problem.  Yes it is
true that people enter and leave without care for her feelings.  We had the
cats when we were together and I decided not to argue over them because I
knew she would take care of them.  Now the cats are back with me because
there is nothing we can do to keep them in the house.  Secondary entrances
and signs work when people give a f.ck... now I am left here with the two
cats that don't remember me and a whole tidal wave of past emotions.  I went
and bought her some spray to put on the carpet but apparently there is no
carpet at the doorway, just wooden floors.

Can you move away from these people? How about have them leave?

It couldn't hurt to try one of those sprays. Many cats don't like the
smell of citrus, maybe try spraying a citrus cleanser in that area.

If you have to have these people around, is there a way to keep the cats
in a different area of the house until you can get control of the
situation?

Hope you can work something out,

Rhonda
