I've tried carpet tape, sticky side up. I haven't tried powders/chemicals
of some type they may hate. What will inhibit the cat besides putting a dog
on the counter to keep them off?
Thanks...

I just backhand them off the wall, with a good bankshot they go right into
the boiling pot, lots of screeching and the like, very dramatic.

Keep a spray bottle of water handy and give it to them in the face.
Pretty much cured mine of the habit quickly. (Accompanied by NO!).

That works well with *most* cats. Cats are creatures of habit; and when
something *habitually* irritates them (like a squirt in the face under
repeated circumstances) they will
alter the circumstances (change their habit) and stop getting on the counter
top.

Yes, the spray bottle works remarkably well, even for dogs. :-)

A friend of mine suggested using tin foil. Place it on the table, mantle,
etc. We did it with our cat and it seemed to help. Good luck.

We once stacked some backing trays on the counter. The cat could not see
them from below and jumped. Cat and trays fell down together with a loud
noise. Although this was not planned the cat never went there again. So
maybe you should start baking ;-)
